Show THE TRIKE IN I BELGUM Protest Against Rejecting the Universal Suffrage Bill POLICE CHARGE THE MOB Several Thousand Rioters Parade the Streets of Brussels An Excited Mob Surrounds the Chamber of Deputies Attempts to Arrest the Leaders A Bow in Which Many Arc Injured BRUSSELS April ISThe strike inaugurated inau-gurated by the labor leaders as a protest against the rejection of the universal suf frae bill is still spreading In the vicinity vici-nity of Mons fifteen thousand men are on a strike Fifteen mines and two factories in the central district are idle At Vaver des fortyfive factories were compelled to close in consequence of the exodus of employees em-ployees A large and excited mob was around the chamber of representatives today when the session resumed and many of the more turbulent were arrested ar-rested While exMinister Wooster was returning home from the chamber a man attacked him The man tried to escape but was caught after trying to draw a revolver re-volver on his pursuers A savage encounter between strikers and gen darmes occurred this evening Three thousand strikers raised a barricade barri-cade to prevent the gen darmes from patrolling pa-trolling their beats The gen dames repeatedly charged the men One gen darrae who was thrown off his horse w ia maltreated by tho mob and several other gen darmes were seriously injured The rioters afterward attacked the shop of a butcher who supplied tho gen darrae Paturges near Mans was also the scene of an encounter between strikers and gendarmes gen-darmes zen Several thousand rioters paraded th streets in the lower part of the City this evening They smashed tho windows of many cafes and shops a they marched along The police charged the rioters with drawn sabres and eventually succeeded suc-ceeded in dispersing thstanob Several persons were severely injurSd and many arrests were made Among the men arrested rested were the socialist leaders Volders Vanderveld and Maes They were arrested while inciting rioters riot-ers to further violence I is reported that the anarchists distributed dis-tributed cartridges among the crowd The civil guards were called out and held in readiness for any emergency They are supplied with ball cartridges and instructed in-structed to act promptly and with all the severity necessary to suppress any disorder dis-order that may arise At midnight the city Is tranquil Vol ders Vanderveld and Mass were liberated and extra police and guards were dismissed dis-missed for tho night Two gendarmes were seriously hurt others alight |
