Progress on the Track Since the Driving Park has changed hands improvements have been going on as fast as possible and by the time those entering for the races are here with their horses everything will be in fine condition Mr Lewis is at present directing the alterations and having managed prominent tracks in differetparts of the country is well prepared to take charge of these changes He has already made the track six feet wider and it is now wide enough for six horses to score abreast He I is praying for a raIn so inau ne can grade the track to the inside all around when it will have a fall of about one inch to the foot Around the inside of the track also he has had dug a trench so that when it rains the track will shed the water into the trench which will be I tapped at certain points and the water carried in pools made to receive re-ceive it The old stable to the southwest of the grand stand is being torn down In its place will be built a joint stable and bar This stable will have six stalls or more and the bar will face the track having a front of thirty four feet The quarter stretch about the stand will be enclosed in a picket fence and will be a privileged place that is those purchasing the right to enter this stretch will enjoy the privilege of the pools the bar and the grand stand A fence will also be put up all the way around the halfmile track This will keep horses from bolting and enable the track to be kept under better control The mile track is also to be fixed up and kept in repairs for driving and exercising Along the fence at the southeast corner and running west from the gate there is to be built a stretch of stabling 150 feet in length while running north from the corner will be put up as much stabling as nossible without en croaching on the mile track Where ever there is a place along the fence where a stable can be put up without with-out interfering with the track it will be done This is to give ample accommodation to those coming here with horses and the room will be given without charge No time is being lost The contract for the work is out and the greater part of it will be finished this week Mr Lewis says that the halfmile track can not only be made good but it can and will be made a fast track In a few T i eeks the alterations altera-tions now under weigh will be so far advanced that its own mother speaking very figuratively will not know the track There is hardly a doubt that the meeting will be a big success JBuclmpaiba7 Quick complete cure all annoy ing Kidney Bladder and Urinary Diseases 81 Druggists five years As has been the case all along government was unprepared to prosecute them This time the reason was sufficient Some of the defendants had never been arrested others had been released re-leased and were out of the country altogether and the witnesses were also away The consequence was that eight of these cases were called and the inability of the prosecution to go to trial in each case being stated all were dismissed and the calendar cleared of the old standbys stand-bys To Do BATTLE SUCCESSFULLY with an obstinate cough to subdue sore throat overcome incipient bronchitis banish week ago last Tuesday night a petition was presented to the City Council calling attention to the matter making drive somewhere in this vicinity The subject has mooted for a long time but assumed a tangible form in the petition referred to and it was referred to a committee of the City Council The committee made a report on Tuesday Tues-day evening last which after referring re-ferring to other things states that the portion of the drive which will meet present requirements extends ex-tends from the northwestern corner of Liberty Park through the lane on the west side of the park to the Penitentiary road About onethird of this distance is within the corporate cor-porate limits and to be in good condition con-dition requires grading and the construction con-struction of one wooden and two stone abutment bridges The committee com-mittee recommends that 1000 or so much as may be necessary be appropriated for this purpose provided pro-vided the citizens will pay the additional ad-ditional amount necessary to complete com-plete it and also recommends that the work be done at once under the direction of the street supervisor That the citizens will furnish the additional amount there is no doubt for a drive has long been a necessity neces-sity If it can be laid out properly and kept repaired any reasonable amount given towards the object will be saved in a short time in the decreased wear and tear on bug gies to say nothing of the injury which will be prevented to fine horses which now suffer from being speeded over hard and rocky roads The selection of the location of the drive is about the best that could have been made as it takes in the most desirable portion of the city and is in a situation where the cost and repairs will not be great and where a horse can be speeded without injury the ground Deinj just soft and spungy enough The time required to make it available will not be long and long before the summer has passed the route referred re-ferred to will doubtless be the scene of many pleasant drives and many friendly contests equine speed SCIPIO N Y Dec 1 1879 I am the Pastor of the Baptist Church here and an educated physician Theatre last night in the production pro-duction of Madame Favart It was not only sung and played wejl individually and as a whole but it was put on the boards superbly The march in the last act with the band had a grand effect and was received with prolonged applause which necessitated a repetition Mr Howson literally covered himself him-self with glory in his character while Mr Bell added to his already general popularity Messrs Camp bell Cripps and Frear were most deserving de-serving of the applause they re ceived Miss Jansen made a cap ital Madame Favart and sang and acted with splendid effect Her popularity is also increasing in-creasing Miss Joyce and the other ladies of the company acquitted themselves in true artistic style Of course glittering generalties in a theatrical notice are commonplace common-place but where the performance was good in every respect it is difficult diffi-cult to refer to the matter in any other way A characteristic of this troupe is the attention to
