political politi-cal incidents and consequences antI criticised the policy of the democratic demo-cratic party in that connection That party he claimed was Icday actuated by the old rebel spirit and north south east and west was the party of fraud oppression and the overriding ot justice In Maine it ambitiously sought to pilfera whole state Applause The republican party on the other hand tells us James A Garfield as one of the committee was greeted with considerable applause After the roll call had been finished Frye called attention to the fact that Utah had not been called and moved that the omission be rectified I The chair mid Utah would be called if there was no objection Conkling of New York rising was received with applause and eaid there was objection holding aa ho did that the order of tha convention had been executed when it had called the roll as prepared by the national committee com-mittee There was a contest in Utah as in Louisiana and they were omitted The chair ruled that as tho committees com-mittees roll had been called a motion to add any other state or territory was in oraer Frye said it was agreed by the committee com-mittee that Utah should be put upon that roll great applause and that the secretary of the national corn mittce says the Utah omission we made by mistake Wild applause Conkling said if there had been a mistake it should be corrected The only special significance of this colloquial incindent was the enthuai as tic applause which greeted Frye from both the galleries and the floor McCormick of Arizona moved the call cf the roll of states and Applause There were veteran soldiers supporting sup-porting each of the presidential candidate didate so that there were no particular par-ticular motive in his motion He I himself had to enter the building this morning without a ticket because ho could not get a ticket from the national committee He was here and he wanted to see the veterans also admitted not to make a noise or to cheer for any man but to look upon the convention which bad to nominate the man for whom they would have to vote Loud cheers Kilpatrick of New Jersey seconded tho motion with all his heart Adopted Coupling moved that aa acme of he committees aready appointed could not report in time for an even ng eeeeion tonight the convention take recess until Urnorrnw morning at 11 ocloik Hale of Maine concured in the uselessness of an evening session nnd in Conklings mtton which was adopted So recess wa taken at 3 pm until tomorrow at 11 The organization o > standing com uitlecp tcJay indicates clearly that Blames friends have control ot that on credentials nnd that Elaine and Sherman men will contio tbe rules and order of business This is another heavy blow to Grants prospects Hu managers however are struggling to bold their forces tegether their plan being to endeavor to tire out Blains adherents with the hope of causing them to break in such a manner as to give the Grant men power to control con-trol nomination of a compromise candidate but as Blames friends are by far tho most earnest and enthusiastic enthusi-astic of cell the factions here the Grant tail is not likely to succeed in wagging the Blame dog Some shrewd calculator to night estimate Blames strength at ever 800 votes on the first or second ballot while Grants according to the present appearance ap-pearance cannot be much larger on the first and is likely to be considerable consider-able lees on the second Pixley as chairman of the consolidated consoli-dated Pacific Coast delegation < staking s-taking active part in the proceedings and tbe credentials committee haw accepted his invitation to meet in the spacious California headquarters Exciting scenes are expectod tomorrow to-morrow when the committees report but Blame men while very firm are conciliatory to all points There still eeema to be little confidence anywhere any-where that Sherman or Edmuuds can draw materially from the two leading lead-ing candidates There continues to be much leaning towards Wusbburne 13 a probable dark horse and some quiet work in the eamc direction ia doing for Garfield The Edmunds men are courting the Wuabburno sentiments by suggesting tbe latter for the second place on the ticket with their own favorite Fred Billings Bil-lings is to put Edmunds in nomination nomina-tion After the adjournment ol the convention con-vention the committee on cred n tints met and organized Green B I Raum of Illinois nominated for chairman of tho committee Mr Tracey of Now York and Wm E I Chandler nominated O B Conger 01 i Michigan Congressman Conger was chosen by a largo majority The antithird term men point to this asa as-a significant vole but the other side deny that it is indicative of the relative rela-tive strength The committee then took recess until 5 ofclose and is now in session at tho Sherman House The committee on resolutions elected as its chairman Hon Edward Ed-ward Pierrepont alter which they beard an address foin a delegate from the Womans Suffrage Association Associa-tion now in session here Rumor a canvass of tho says credentials cre-dentials committee shows that thl Y stand twentynine prom-ises to hold an allnight session They have thus far decided cnly ono case which was that of Rapier anti Grant from the Fourth Alabama disfrict I was decided by a vote of 31 to 12 to report in favor of admitting admit-ting Rapier This was the only test vote in the committee except that upon which Conger was made chairman chair-man being 29 to 11 Tho mln 1 committee com-mittee briefly considered tbe case ol Smith and Warner of Alabama Ala-bama contested but they were passed for the time and the Illinois Illi-nois case was taken un Kirkhawes presenting i This caee will probably prob-ably occupy tbe greater part of the session of the committee oa permanent perma-nent organization Tbe Kentucky delegation held a caucus today and reaffirmed the resolution of the state convention which instruct them to vote as a unit Mr E 0 Hubbard of the delegation slates that notwithstanding notwithstand-ing this action four of the delegates will disregard the instructions Tho first vote in committee on credentials tonight was taken in the case of Rapier contestant from the Fourth district of Alabama and was a fair test of the relative strength of the Grant and antiGrant men in the committee and showed thirtyone antiGrant t twelve Grant All the Pacific states and territories and Dakota and Utah voted with the minority majority and Colorado with the The committee on credentials tonight to-night first considered the Oregon case Mitchell announced that be appeared as proxy for J M JUcCall I No alternates were elected at the I Oregon convention and he therefore made two propositions First that he would act for McCall and second that Edwaid Nerthrup be eubatituteJ for himself provided that tbe gentlemen gentle-men selected by the delegation from his state George H Williams and Edward Ncrthrup were authorized to cast the vote of these absent The former was substituted for McCall The committee on permanent organization or-ganization agreed on the following vice resolutions in its hands which have been referred for report to morrow morning to a subcommittee sub-committee consisting of Edwards Pierrepont Emory Btcrrs Chicago D 0 Payne California William Walter helps New Jersey and 0 W Clark Mississippi I is admitted that there will be a minority report of the committee on credentials and that the question of the admission of the contesting delegates will come early before the convention tomorrow morning At General Shermans headquarters tonight the following est rates are made of the first ballot after the unit rule 13 abrogated Grant 297 Blaine 276 Sherman 188 The came of Garfield has been = r = k = quite frequently mentioned tonight to-night aa a possible compromise In the Grant caucus to nightrfl a Eharthnnd reporter was present during the speeches which Bout well and ConkHnR made The I former deqbred they bad from 325 to 380 votes on the first ballot and that the nomination of Gen Grant was secure Conkling mid there was no usa of concealing or perverting facts I was time now lo look this matter squarely in the face Not more than 300 votes were assured for Grant on the first ballet They need net count on moreunless they secured them herealter He advised sorcerer that they hold together through the final second and to the tenth ballot i necessary but nut to yield They would eventually worry out their opponents and win They would not hear offer nor accept any compromise The breaks would come from other candidates and then they would gain convert A committee of one Irons each state represented at the caucus was appointed to visit tbs various state delegations and to report re-port progress tomorrow morning At this point ot the proceedings the reporter was somewhat summarily removed from tie meting Washington 2 Interest felt among republicans at the capital in the proceedings at Chicago was very intense teday Senator Conklings imperious remarks to New York delegates dele-gates at tneir meeting yesterday nnd biB announcement tat he will cast the vote of New York na a unit caused much comment The agreement agree-ment yesterday between the friends and opponent of Grant relative to temporary organization of the convention con-vention i1 net regarded aq an ending of hostilities but simply as a lull in the storm which will probably breakout break-out afresh and with increased fury when the instructed delegations from New Yoik Pennsylvania and Illinois cast their vctes Elaine men here regard with suspicion the selection by Grant meu of Senator Hear for temporary chairman of the convention conven-tion lor Hoar is not friendly to Elaine but on tho whole they confess coness to be extremely well satisfied with the outlook for tomorrow and predict pre-dict Blames nomination on tbe third or fourth ballot |
