Show FUNERAL OF MISS COHEN Held Under the Auspices of the Hebrtw Society A LARGE ATTENDANCE OF FRIENDS OF THE DECEASED Many Floral Tributes An Autopsy Held Although the Hebrew Society So-ciety Protested Against ItSome Criticism Because of the Instructions Instruc-tions of the Family Regarding the Services v Contrary to every expectation an autopsy was performed upon the body of the late Miss Eva Cohen yesterday afternoon but an hour or two before the funeral As a result the stomach was removed and delivered to a chemist chem-ist for analysis The investigation ly scalpel was not effected without opposition from the Hebrews under whose auspices the last services to the dead were rendered While the whole thing was offensive to the Hebrew society so shortly before I the funeral the most serious objection was raised to the removal of anv por tion of the body Upon the autopsy however being a question of payment on the insurance policy taken out by I Miss Cohen on tile 8th of this month The New York Life through its local agent demanded the inquiry and Justice Jus-tice Sommer granted it It was prompted by a suspicion that death was produced by the administration of strychnine and this is the particular poison for which the chemist will direct di-rect his test IN A HEALTHY CONDITION Dr Hushes and Dr Dalby removed the stomach and scrutinized all of the vital organs and the brain These were found to be in perfectly normal condition condi-tion not even the slightest indication of congestion being noticeable The brain was healthy and showed no disorders dis-orders even of a local character Tn the stomach was found about a Dint of nourishment which was preserved No returns can be had from the analysis analy-sis for fullv 18 hours If the formula for the detection of strychnine fails I then the insurance company has the alternative of either ordering further I analysis or paying the principal of the policy ar to Nathan Cohen the benefici I THE FUNERAL Although the Jewish society entered its protest against the order that violated vio-lated their customs the affront was overlooked and the ritual was read over the bier while two tall candles were burning at the head and feet of the remains re-mains At a point in the ceremony the candle at the head of the casket was extinguished signifying that the golden bowl had been broken while the bright flame at the feet told how the lamp of faith would guide the wanderer to the mercy seat Beyond these features fea-tures the service was devoid of special interest FLORAL TRIBUTES Upon the casket and banked around it were masses of floral tributes from the board of education several literary I societies of which Miss Cohen had been a member and from individual I friends among the public school teachers teach-ers of the city The funeral parlor I of the Evans undertaking establish ment was so full of friends that the doors had to be closed turning many away The Hebrew society had provided four carriages for any friendswho desired de-sired to accompany the cortege to the place of interment Not a few accepted ac-cepted the opportunity The pall bearers bear-ers were selected from among countrymen country-men of the deceased They were D M I Hartwitz M Glassl erg Herman Bam berger A Levy Sig Simon C H Sol monson SOME CRITICISM There was some criticism of the fam ilys instructions regarding the rites by which Miss Cohen should be buried She was proven to have renounced the religion in which she had been reared having relinquished all blood ties on this account and friends thought that more consideration might have been shown the opinions of the deceased if no evidences of suicide are discovered discov-ered br the chemist the 52000 insurance insur-ance will become the legacy of Nathan Cohtn |
