Show D AT THE ORPHANS HOMESICKNESS HOME-SICKNESS AMONG THE INMATES OF TH INSTITUTION The Place Visited by Health Commissioner Com-missioner Dalby Who Also Caljs at the County Infirmary Health Commissioner Dalby went on a tour of inspection yesterday the object ob-ject of his investigations being the Orphans Home on State street near Twelfth South What brought the health commissioner to the institution was a complaint that the children were not receiving proper care and as a result re-sult of which a disease had broken out among the little tots The complaint is not the first of its kind as it has been rumored for a week or two past that the proper medical med-ical attention was not being given to sick inmates of the home The institution tution is in charge of Mrs Louise Koen a lady of the Christian Scientist faith a fact that has caused some mothers having children in the home to complain com-plain of the treatment their little ones were receiving I was claimed that if any of the inmates were taken sick they were not given medicine but were treated according to Christian Science ideas Little Frank Howard is a bright lad of perhaps 6 summers He was placed in the home which is supported by charities and is supposed to be abso utely nonsectarian several weeks ago and his mother has been paying 3 per month toward his care Before he was taken to the home he a examined by Dr Dalby who gave the mother a certificate cer-tificate to the effect that the boy was perfectly well Frank had not been at the home very long until he got a sore mouth and nose The ailment though not of a serious nature at all was serous evidently contracted from some of the other children as five or six were affected fected about the same time When Dr Dalby called yesterday he found 25 inmates at the home Six of these wore affected by this soreness When some of the children were questioned ques-tioned they claimed they all used the same towel and this is probably how the contaclon spread The health official of-ficial found the home in a good sanitary sani-tary condition however and when the matron Mrs Koen was questioned she said as soon as any of the children were taken sick she would send for a physician The attention of the board of managers man-agers composed of prominent society ager ladies has been called to Frank How ards case and some developments may follow Mrs Howprd went out to the home yesterday afternoon and brought I Frank up to Dr Dalbys office first however securing a permit from one of the members of the board I I may be of interest in this connec ion to note that the health commis sioner yesterday also visited the county infirmary and found that institution in better shape than any poor house he had ever visited Although the infirm crowded everything ary is somewhat eventhing vas as neat and orderly as the proverbial verbial Dutch kitchen and as manager of an institution of this kind Dr Dalby is willing to pronounce Mrs Whipple a success |
