wa the dedication of the new Masonic hal 1 at the corner of West Temple and Second South streets R I I was a day of festivity and hundreds f of the fraiternity as well as their Iriends and families turned out to do honor to the brotherhood and view its new temple The dedicatory exercises howeier while open to the public were witnessed by few outside of the members mem-bers of the order ami those participating partici-pating in the vocal exercises THE NEW TEMPLE The new house of the fraternity is one of the most complete and elegant in the west The entire second floor i of the building has been fitted up and include two commodious lodge halls an armory and reception parlors The offices of the grand lodge face West Temple street and here also is beat fd the grand iodge library 0 te gano rdge llrary Throughout Through-out the building there are numerous small rooms and cozy nooks fitted up in the most tasteful manner The new quarters were pronounced by many f visiting brothers of the order as among tht most handsome they fcsid ever seer THE PARADE The celebration began with a parade promptly at 2 oclock in the afternoon in Which fully rOO Masons took part The line formed on Main street in front of the old Masonic hall = hal The procession proces-sion was under command of Grand Marshal Harry M Gushing assisted by Assistant Grand Marshal Samuel Paul The column reached over two blocks the different organizations coming in the order named name 1 Helds bald Utah commandery No 1 Iv T of r Salt Lake 54 swords I El Monte commandery No 2 K T of Otden 36 swords r Utah chaptered 1 R A M Argenta lodge No 3 JFi Moriah lodge No 2 Wasatch lodge No 1 Grand lodge officials The line of march was north on Main street to South Temple thence countermarched to First South thence II east to State street thence south to Third South thence west to Main thence noi rh on Main to First South thence west to West Temple and south on that street to the hal VIEWED BY HUNDREDS The marchers presented a handsome I and was viewed hun appearance wa yicwr by un dreds of visitors from thfe sidewalks c and the building along the line of march I As the procession brought up at heal he-al the divisions lined up in double column and saluted the nd < grand lodge officials as they marched down between I the ranks Each lodge in the order of the parade then fell in after the grand lodge and marched into the large hal where the dedicatory exercises exer-cises took place THE PLACE OF HONOR Being the oldest among the odge presented Wasatch No 1 occupied the place of hemor its officers presiding presid-ing pending the arrival of the grand lodge officers by whom the dedicators exercises were performed The Ma exercs sonic choir was i Attendance and rendered ren-dered in an excellent J A Graham Re L B Ridgley Dr A S Chapman Chap-man Lieutenant Sorlo ind Mr Sauer The choir was under the leadership of Professor Sullivan and Miss Carrie Bo oiettl presided with much grace at the I piano Pending the arrival of the grand lodge Miss Bonetti rendered a selection on the piano and was given gven a hearty encore DEDICATORY EXERCISES I was nearly 4 oclock when everything every-thing was in readiness to proceed with the beautiful dedicatory exercises The members of the Grand lodge entered the room in full regalia and carrying the symbol of the lodge The most worshipful grand mater W T Dalby was at once escorted to the grand masters chair and the other officers of the Wasatch lodge likewise gave way to their superior officials in rank After the choir had sang Now Open Wide the Temple Door the worshipful mater of Wosatch lodge advanced and addressed the most worshipful grand master a follows The brethren breth-ren of Wasatoh lodge No1 of ML Moriah No 2 and of Argenta No 3 F and A M being animated wi h a desire to promote the interests of the j craft have erected the Masonic hal i for their convenience and accommodation 1 accommo-dation They arc desirous that the same shall be examined by the most I worshipful Grand lodge and if it should meet their approbation that it be solemnly dedicated to Masonic purposes pur-poses agreeable to ancient forms and usages To this Most Worshipful Grand Master Mas-ter Dalby replied My brethren you have each representing your respect respec-t ve lodges applied to the most worshipful wor-shipful grand master for parmission to novc Into this hal The rtes of our ancient institution having Iwen complied com-plied with this privilege Ja been granted to you The teachings of our ancient institutions however are that before entering upon any great or important undertaking we should first invoke the blessings of God We will now therefore mUte with our most iworshlpful grand chaplain in an address ad-dress to the throne of divine Clark then came for I I ward and Brother Architect A M Grant addressed the choir as follows Having been intrusted with the superintendence and management J superinitenrence al maaglent of the workmen employed in the construction con-struction of this edifice and having according I ac-cording to the best 6f our ability accomplished ac-complished the task assigned us we now return oui thanks for the honor of I this appointment and beg leave to surrender up the implements which were committed to our care when the foundation of the fabric was laid here the architect presents the most worshipful grand master with a square level and plumb and hoping that everything which ha bEn made on this occasion will be crowned with your approbation and that of the most worshipful grand lodge Then the most worshipful grand mastr replied Brother architect the skill and fidelity displayed in the erection of the trust reposed in you at the commencement of this undertaking under-taking have secured the entire appro and they bation of the grand lodge sincerely pray that this edifice may continue a lasting monument of the taste spirit and liberality of its founders found-ers At this point the right worshipful deputy grand master arose and addressed I ad-dressed the most worshipful grandmaster grand-master This hal in which we are now assembled and the plan upon which constructed having met with your approbation it Is the desire of this fraternity that it should be dedicated according to ancient form and usages The right worshipful grand master then replied Agreeably to the request re-quest of the brethren we will now proceed pro-ceed with the ceremonies The members of the grand lodge formed a circle between the grand masters chair and the altar in the centre of the room The junior grand warden advanced to the centre of the circle with a silver goblet and facing the most worshipful grand master addressed ad-dressed him as follows In the dedication dedi-cation of Masonic halls i has been the immemorial custom to pour corn on the lodge as an emblem of nourishment nourish-ment I therefore present you this I vessel of corn to be employed by you according to ancient usage The lodge is then called up the most worshir > ful grand master takes the goblet of corn and pours it over the emblem of the lodge while saying In the name of the great Jehovah to I whom be all honor and glory I now solemnly dedicate this hal to Free Masonry I Ma-sonry After giving the grand honors once the members of the grand lodge then take up the march in a circle keeping step with the orchestra after which tlhi senior grand warden advances to the center of the circle also with a silver goblet and addresses the most worshipful wor-shipful grand master in the following words Wine the emblem of refreshment refresh-ment having been used by our ancient brethren in the dedication and consecration conse-cration of their lodges I present to you I this vessel of wine to be used on the I present occasion according to ancient I Masonic form I I Again the lodge is called up and as the most worshipful grand master advances ad-vances and sprinkles the wine upon the emblem of the lodge he repeats I In the name of the holy St John I do now solemnly dedicate this hall to I virtue w r This Is followed by giving the grand honors which consists in clapping the hands three times twice Jn succession the march is agaIn taken up Thethird and last ceremony consists in the right worshipful deputy grandmaster I grand-master advancing to the center of the circle with goblet in hand and addressing address-ing the most worshinful grand master as follows I present you to be used according to ancient custom this vessel ves-sel of oil an emblem that the joy which should animate every bosom on the completion of every important undertaking under-taking The lodge is again called up the mot worshipful grand next advances to the emblem of the loge and pours I the oil upon it a he repeats the words I In the name of the whole fraternity I do now dedicate this hall to universal benevolence The grand honors were then given three times and this concluded the ritualistic exercises Before the Grand lodge retired theM the-M W I Dr Dalby expressed his pleasure at seeing so many brethren present He referred to the beautiful autful hall and the pleasure of the Grand lodge in dedicating the same Concluding Con-cluding he thanked the fraternity for the kind interest displayed which characterized a warmness in the bosom for Free Masonry Prayer by the chaplain concluded > the work and the members and friends then enjoyed an informal social time during the remainder oE the afternoon after-noon I noonEVENING EVENING RECEPTION The reception in the evening was the greatest event of its kind ever witnessed in this city The attendance in the early part of the evening was too large for comfort every available inch of space on the floor If every room anteroom and corridor being occupied oc-cupied and locomotion wa only possible pos-sible under the greatest difficulties while hundreds failed to gain admission admis-sion at l Later the crowd thinned down somewhat and then it was much pleasanter for those who remained The elegant lodgerrooms parlors anterooms etc were greatly admired the decorations which cost many thousands thou-sands of dollars attracting universal attention and unqualified approval Choice flowers and fowers evergreens were tastefully and abundantly arranged in alcoves and niches here and there I producing quite an artistic and pleasing pleas-ing effect The reception committee was attentive atten-tive and courteous to the guests and no pains were spared to make everyone feel at ease at the house warming The committee was composed of the following owing pieces The programme I of pieces was exceedingly well selected and the chosen for gems rendition were given in the very best manner possible possi-ble and with true artistic genius Refreshments were served by the ladies dies of the Eastern Star and this part of the programme was well patronized An Impromptu presentation of a cane to Grand Master William T Dafiby was a pleasing Interlude This cane was no ordinary one I was of white maple woO and on it from knob to ferrule was carved Masonic symbols of the various branches of the order from the blue lodge to tIThe thirtythird degree the whole surmounted by the American Ameri-can eagle and the stars and stripes The cane was the work of a Montana Free Mason and was presented by Grand Marshal H M Gushing on behalf be-half of his brother Masons GrandMaster Grand-Master Dalby responded in a suitable and witty speech which was received with applause The cane has an elegant ele-gant sifrver head on which a suitable inscription will be engraved I was nearing the hour of midnight when the last guests made their adieu and all wish the Masons a4d al < unalloyed prosperity and felicity in their new and elegant quarters So mote Iti be |
