of ot an on excellent program given by bythe bythe bythe the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Miss lIss Genevieve Clark Wilson lIson the soprano so soloist soloist loist with the orchestra was suffering from a severe cold last evening and was unable to sing although she bravely ap appeared appeared appeared and attempted to sing her num number number number ber Michaela from Carmen She had scarcely begun to sing when she dis discovered discovered covered that her voice olce was in such a condition from the effect of the cold that thatto thatto to attempt to sing would be useless She stopped In the time midst Of OC her solo and re requested requested requested quested Adolph Rosenbeck r to ask the audience to excuse her from singing John B Miller lIller th r tenor soloist ap appeared appeared appeared later on the program in an ex cx extra extra tra number and sang the Aria Arlo from Car Carmen Carmen Carmen men Mr III Millers solo was given gen In lieu of the solo that Miss Wilson lIson was unable to sing and was greatly appreciated apprecIated by the audience which called him back several times Mr tr Miller has a voice of excellent melodic quality and of such volume that he easily filled the taber tabernacle tabernacle tabernacle nacle In the second s ond part of oC the pro program program program gram he sang the love sons song son of in the Wedding Feast with much grace and anil expression Of the orchestra selections the En Entrance Entrance Entrance trance of or the tue Gods Into from Cram Wagners was the most difficult and at the same time th the most satisfying All or of the parts were v re rewell well handled and tho the piece was vms played so superbly that It seemed that the con conductor conductor conductor ductor of the orchestra was waa playing and that each of the player was but a key in a great organ that he controlled by b the motions of or his hi baton In la contrast to the selection sele Uon from Got was the th Spanish Rhapsodic sadie sodie that was played ayed excellently but which lacked tho force ot or Wagners Vagn rs composition The Dance of oC the Sylphs and the Dance of or the Will o the Wisp from The Damnation of Faust were pretty selections and gave the or orchestra orchestra orchestra chestra the opportunity to display much skill The opening concert was a surprise to to I the vast afternoon aCt audience which nearly filled tho the tabernacle Not only was Its arrangement nt more ambitious than are those of oC most afternoon events eVent but th visiting artists artist seemed f at their best I Sullivans Overture dl di Ballo was wag a chosen for an opening selection and it was WW rendered in splendid style The beau beautifully melodious m passages were brought out in most effective manner by b the in instruments InStruments Two Hungarian dances s fol lot followed followed lowed and the marked contrast between the Ule first and second numbers in time and ana expression lent additional charm to them The next selections by the full orchestra were two from second Indian suite LoVe Ioe Song and In Wartime both of ot them filled with the spirit of or Indian life so 50 rarely found in musical compositions One Om of or the tha gems g ms of or the afternoon and indeed one of the finest fines I numbers on the entire program was the exquisite sor sorrow sorrow sorrow row of which is evidenced d In every ec note Another Giles number Spring fol followed followed lowed this and for a n closing number the Coronation March by b was a given a The soloists Frank Wagner Wa ner Arthur and Rose LUtiger Gammon Gannon were all ull received with such Huch favor as to tomake tomake tomake make one think them all nil favorites The Th violinist had chosen for his solo Goiter Golt r mans minor concerto in which he ha hal haI l the full lull orchestral accompaniment So splendid was the selection and the work of oC the artist that he ho was Tas a recalled and responded with the daintiest
