Mr. Phelps' career was in many j roi-peela a remarkable one. lie was early ideutitied with the Church of Jo-! bus Christ of Latter-day faints and, soon after its organization as.-umed editorial fuuetious in connection with the propagation of its faith. He was a man of decided literary tastes, and in a long life had acquired a large aud varied va-ried amount of knowledge which he had the faculty of presenting in a peculiarly pecu-liarly piquant and original manner.
