Mother Dr Dalby yesterday made an investigation investi-gation regarding the death of Miss Helen Louder who died while under the care of Christian Scientists The result showed that the young ladys deimLss was due to an abeess ana not to typhoid as was thought probable by the health department The certificate certifi-cate turned In originally gave the cause of death as strangulation This of course was not satisfactory to the health officials and a burial permit per-mit was refused until more informs toro had been obtained Nevertheless funeral services were held although there was no burial Dr Dalby went into the matter thoroughly and at the end the select isis stated that they would in future comply strictly with the regulations regarding contagious diseases as all physicians do and report each case lo the authorities They also stated that they recognized such diseases as typhoid ty-phoid and would net attempt to act in opposition to the law I Mrs Lowders Statement Mrs Lowder mother of the deceased I girl makes the following statement regarding re-garding the case My daughter 17 years of age was up to her meals each day and desired to attend school even when I wished her to remain at home She was never refused I re-fused medical aid at any time and when asked if she wanted a physician she replied that she did not and that she was perfectly satisfied with the hslp she had She was never forced out of bed at any time nor even urged to getup get-up but on the contrary I encouraged her to remain in bed even when she herself preferred to be up In fact I never refused anything she asked for or wanted during her illness I desire also to say that my daughter was not I taken out on the porch against her wish I but was up each day and went where she wished In time of trouble I had naturally expected that my brotherin law Mr Tstloclc would give me much help but from him I have met the most opposition and I desire also to add that Mr Tatlock who furnished so much information and claimed to know so much about the case and who has I caused me so much unnecessary trouble trou-ble was never in my hoUse during my I daughters illness nor did lee at any time even come to the door to ask I about her although he lives next door to me While I feel that the information he has furnished has done us a great injustice in-justice and put us to much trouble I shall remember him in Christian kindness kind-ness and if he needs my help as a neighbor I shall do what I can when I needed I also wish to say that I nev rat r-at any time refused to let Dr King make any examination he wished as I I sent for him for that purpose While I here Dr King expressed himself as I thinking a pest mortem examination was not necessary I also desire to say I that we could not sign a certificate representing my daughter t9 have a I disease which she did not have hence we refused to sign anything but the II I first certificate which gave the facts I must also say that my daughter did I not expire while being dressed and I that there is not a trace of truth in I that statement I also wish it understood under-stood that we do not blame Dr Dalby or any of the board of health for the delay in the burial as I know they were I acting officially and upon the false statements furnished them When I learned where the trouble was I desired de-sired Dr Dalby to come to my house and fully investigate the matter He did so and brought four of the board of health with him When they learned the facts a certificate of burial was issued is-sued at once I must also add that Mr Coats did not refer to any city official offi-cial at any time during his remarks and that he did not speak unkindly of any one in any way but merely announced I an-nounced that the burial was delayed as some of the friends were not satisfied satis-fied with the burial certificate The service was animated throughout by a spirit of love and Christian forbearance forbear-ance as those who were present can i testify I i In behalf of the friends who helped j me so faithfully I gladly say that I i Christian Scientists are not lawbreakers lawbreak-ers and that they are seriously misrepresented j mis-represented along that line They desire de-sire to fulfill the law and be lawabld I ing citizens It is certainly high time that such indignities and injustice to I Christian Scientists as I have just had I to pass through should forever cease i We are lawabiding citizens and are living a Christianity that helps the sorrowIng I sor-rowing and the suffering as well as the I sinful j There are several hundred thousand I Christian Scientists in the United i States several hundred of whom at I tend our church in Salt Lake City i i i who have been raised up from beds of invalidism after all other remedies had i failed We feel that this barbaric persecution i per-secution should cease and that we be j i allowed to live our religion peaceably and to lend a helping hand to suffering I humanity when called upon I desire to thank Dr Dalby and the board of health for their prompt actipn i in issuing the certificate upon learning the facts Respectfully I MRS C B LOWDER |
