Show WjJLIAJ GREENE DEAD Burling Exonerated From all Criminal Intent William Greene who was lying seriously seri-ously ill at the White House yesterday morning when we went to press from an overdose of morphine administered by one Edward Burling Jr of Chicago died at about 430 a m Coroner Taylor summoned a jury and held an inquestat the undertaking rooms of Joseph Wm Taylor at 11 oclock Alexander Muirbrook was the first witness Deceased he said was about 60 years of age an Englishman by birth and had arrived in the city on Wednesday Wednes-day from Stockton where he left a wife and eight children He came to Salt Lake for the purpose of attending the funeral of a brother Knight of Labor Shortly after arriving in Salt Lake deceased I de-ceased had visited St Marys Hospital and in going down the steps had severely sprained his ankle In consequence conse-quence of the accident Greene retired to bed at about 830 but his two companions com-panions did not come in until over an hour later At that hour Green ap peared to be all right save that he j had been drinking a little Had no idea that Greene was ill until some time later when Dr Richards arrived to attend I him Understood that the morphine was administered by a young man liv inK in the hotel 1 1 Dr Bower said he was called about i midnight Dr Richards was then in 4 I attendance and it was evident that deceased 1 de-ceased was suffering from morphine poisoning He learned then that Greene j was groaning with pain when a young I man present at the request of deceased 1 administered a dose of morphine hypo J dermically which not operating as speedily as expected was repeated to the I amount in all of fivesixths of a grain j half a grain is a full doseHe died at I 4 30 The doctor thought the overdose was unintentional Edward Burling Jr of Chicago said he had been in this city about two I weeks On Wednesday evening he heard a man groaning in the room next to his He went to his assistance and asked the sufferer if he could do any thing for him Suggested calling a doctor but deceased did not care to have one and asked that he be given some morphine to relieve him Gave him about half a teaspoonful of Majendies solution hv podermically Deceased did not appear to obtain any relief and in a short time called for more which was given him Witness stated that he had been in the habit of using the drug more or less and that he had taken with impunity im-punity four times the amount he administered ad-ministered to Mr Greene That he gave the medicine in order to relieve him aud with no other motive and that he felt as though his witness life was blasted by the fatal result As soon as practicable after ascertaining that the dose was likely to prove in jurious ne called in a competent physician Dr Richards to do what he T could to remedy the evil Dr Joseph a Richards said he had been called upon by Burling who told him he had administered mornhinn fn the deceased as stated Went to the > t patient and used every known antidote VtL but without success Death undoubtedly > t undoubt-edly resulted from opium poisoning and witness wa convinced that Burling had no criminal intent in administering the drug After a short deliberation the jurors came to the conclusion that William Greene came to his death at 430 am Thursday at the White House in Salt Lake City from the effects of opium poison administered by Edward Burling Bur-ling and they further found that Burling Bur-ling was innocent of any criminal intent in-tent Burling however was still in jail last evening the prosecuting attorney for some reason failing to see the case in the same light as tho coroners jury Just what action will be taken this morning is unknown |
