Show ITS THIRD BIRTHDAY American Chamber of Commerce in Paris Gives a Banquet Paris July 5The American chamber cham-ber of commerce gave Its third Independence Inde-pendence day banquet at the Grand hotel this evening Covers were laid for 500 and the company included many ladies Among the guests were M Rlbot former premier M De Crais representing represent-ing M Hanotaux the French foreign minister who was unable to attend and Chauncey M Depew and M H DeYoung who formally presented General Horace Porter the American ambassador Ambassador Porter presided pres-ided Dr Tyning president of the chamber who briefly sketched General Porters career said that the Mattering reception which had been extended to the new ambassador by the French nation and government was a happy augury General Porter delighted the company with an extremely witty speech in < the course of which he said that as Pres dent McKinleys forefathers fought side by side with Lafayette the pres dent could not but continue and cheer sh a feeling of gratitude toward France M DeCrais presented apologies and regrets of M Hanotaux and expressed the hope that the American senate instead in-stead of trying to crush French commerce com-merce would put a large quantity of French articles on the free list 7H Ribot Mr DeYoung and Mr De pew made speeches that were loudly applauded Mr DeYoung responded to a special toast to the Paris exposition of 1890 He hoped that he government of the United States would make a representation represen-tation In Paris ot the resources of America which would be a fitting response to the contribution by France to the worlds fair at Chicago |
