Show J JI J J I r We Print the News I ITHE THE pathetic attempt of the Salt Lake Tribune to THE 1 convince the public that the action of The Her Her- Republican ald-Republican in publishing an advance list of the appointments that would be made by the new commissioners commissioners com corn missioners was a criticism of the commission an effort to injure it is undoubtedly futile It is really made in a desire to conceal from the people the Tribune inability to get the news and its lack of skill in handling it if by any chance somebody does take a news item into the Tribune and awaken a somnolent somnolent somnolent lent sub-editor sub and kick him into sufficient semblance of life to comprehend it The Republican Herald-Republican is first and md primarily a newspaper its management considers it has a contract contract contract con con- tract with its readers to advise ise them what has happened happened happened hap hap- and so fa far as possible what is going to hap hap- pen In publishing a 3 few days ago a 3 list of the appointments which the commission had planned to tomake tomake tomake make The Republican Herald-Republican considers that it did no more than its duty There are o over er 1000 applicants applicants applicants cants for positions under t the e commissions they their families their friends and endorsers are keenly interested in these appointments Naturally they look to The Tha Republican Herald-Republican to publish promptly the list of successful applicants and to g give ge e such I advance information as can be gotten In publishing the list we wo used The best forma il information tion obtainable and are convinced that the facts as we gave ga them were true In appending to the name of each successful applicant his political affiliation affiliation affiliation tion we merely responded to the desire of many of our readers who wish to know The articles whose chief lack of attraction in Tribune eyes was that the Tn Tribune une unfortunately was engaged in its customary slumber and failed to get the news contained no criticism of the commission either veiled or out out- spoken We submit that each of the more than residents of Utah who read this paper this morning are sufficiently acquainted with its methods as to be able to differentiate between criticism and a plain unvarnished statement of facts Meanwhile we shall continue to print the news all the time the only test we shall apply to it is that of authenticity We can sympathize with the Tribunes Tribune's Tribunes Tribune's Trib Trib- unes une's melancholy over its repeated failure in that supreme test of a newspaper the newspaper the ability to get and intelligently publish the news news but but our contract with our readers forces us to seem hardhearted enough e even en at this joyous Christmas season to hew to the theline theline theline line in that regard even een if it does fill the Tribune yard with hips chips J.
