Show SUNDAY SERVICES The services in the Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon were opened by the choir singing the hymn beginning Oer the gloomy hills of darknesi Prayer by Joseph E Taylor The choir sang the hymn commencing com-mencing 0 Lord of hosts we now awake PRESIDENT W B PRESTON of Cache addressed the congregation He was glad to be associated with the people of God who bad been gathered from the nations of the earth to buildup build-up the Zion of the Lord In order to successfully perform work they must overcome their evil passions and must obey the laws of the gospel of Christ They had come here for the purpose of receiving the instructions instruc-tions of the Lord and walk in obedi enc3 to his commands Their prayer should be to know what they can do to assist in the establishment of the kingdom of God They should live holy and pure livepjobaerving the laws which God had given them for the government of his people they should show that they are the children of God by their daily work in life proving prov-ing that t ey had a better religion than the world had they should be united in their effort to do Gods service The saints are a god peo pie and the religion in which they believe is true being enacted from God who had established his gospel upon the earth from which it would never be taken He desired to live to see the time when there will be universal peace in the world APOSTLE GEORGE TEASDALE next I addressed the congregation likewise bearing his testimony to the truth of what the world called MorMonism The world had never been able to prove the testimony of Joseph Smith was false that Maroni did not give Joseph the golden plates of the Book of Mormon that John did not confer the Aaronio Priesthood on Joseph eto The saints declared to the world that God had restored Hia gospel to earth and they invited mankind to accept the gospel they prove the correctness of the gospel by the Bible The church of Ohriet had an organization organi-zation like unto that of the Savior when he was on the earth not according ac-cording to the manmade churches of Christendom The saints believe men have the right to receive inspiration from God for their edification and guidance Jesus commanded His disciples to preach certain doctrines as repentance and baptism for the remission re-mission of sins and promising salvation salva-tion to believer and these doctrines were being taught by the saints in this age Why should there be so much fault found with the saints The same might be asked in reference refer-ence to Christ and his apostles Why did not the latter when they found the doctrines which they taught were unpopular and offensive give them up and go with the masses Rather than surrender their belief they suffered suff-ered persecution and death because they knew they had the true people just as the edicts know they have the gospel of Christ They never flinched from their testimony and no more did Joseph Smith and his associates repudiate the testimonies The apostle quoted from St John the predictions concerning the establishment establish-ment cf the gospel on the earth in the last days the gospel having been taken from the earth it became necessary nec-essary to restore it and it had been restored just as had been foretold by the ancient prophets It was the same gospel in every particular that had formerly been upon the earth and belief in it was followed by results re-sults like those that had been promised prom-ised to believers anciently The apostle spoke at considerable length and quoted freely from the Bible and Book cf Mormon to prove the divinity of the gospel believed in by the saints and to show that it had been regularly regu-larly received through Joseph Smith He Eaid it was the only word of salvation salva-tion it being necessary for all to walk therein in order to be saved In con elusion he exhorted the saints to be faithful to the gospel living good and holy lives thereby obtaining thereat the-reat reward that awaited the faithful faith-ful They had no occasion to fear the opposition of the world for God would protect them as long as they obeyed him and kept his covenants The choir sang an anthem and Elder G G Bywater pronounced the benediction |
