The prosecution rested their cum.' ibis nfternoon and the defense stated they did uot desire to rail any witnesses. Mr. Dickson made the opening argu- ment which was brief but most scathing. He stated that the prosecution hod presented nil the evidence thry were able to olitaiu and Ixddly charged witnesses with perjury. After Mr. Rawlins hud u.ade a brief reply, the court charged the jury, and in a few minted sentence, expressed iris opinion of U.e manner in which the witnesses had testified. From the reoord of the testimony taken before ihe Grand Jury, it appeared that' the prosecution wss warranted in proxeenting this and Hie conrt had given them latitude to which they were entiled when it apparent that the witnessr were hostile to the government. Judge Zane said that he hadatirmsml abiding conviction that the end. of justice had been defeated in this rase by false swearing, such as he had never before seen anu never again extorted tu sec in a court of justice. The jury were then instructed (j find & verdict of not guilty, which they did without leaving tucir seats. The jurors were then discharged. Connelly wu also discharged, and his bondsmen exonerated. Thus, through the methods peculiar to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daStints, anoHier criminal escapes his just punishment, but the prosecution has not been barren of good results. It has secured a conviction in the minds of the public and in the mind of the court, not only of tho guilt of Connelly of the crime with which he was charged, hut has also shown conclusively the mean which these people are capable uf resorting to in shielding their criminals. e, be-ca- y MILITARY We have i..ir.Hlu:-(- hang, frilling anil siullopinlier iwilit'ht, l'd.i-Uanlet in.1 introiiuiv i:iv t- .
