Ono of ihe most notable events of the history of modern Masonry was the crowning of ihe Poet Laureate of Free Masonry, Rob Morris, of Kentucky, in the Grand Lodge room of the Masonic Temple, last night. General Charles Roome, M. W. Put Grand Master, of New York, presided. Around hiui on the stage were the officers of the Grand Lodge; J. F. Walker, deputy grand master, of Quebec; E. C. Birdsey, grand commander of Templars, of Connecticut; Fernando Eseoba, of thirty-thir- d degree, of Cuba; Stephen Smith, commander-in-chieof New Jersey Consistory; C. L. Davidson, past grand senior warden, of West Virginia; G. C. Beta, past grand senior warden, of Pennsylvania, and a score of other equally eminent members of the fraternity. After a programme embracing music, recitations, etc., Grand Master William A. Brodie made a short address on the history of Masonic laureation, saying that Robert Buns had been the only Mason hitherto crowned in all the existence of the order. lie said that Masonic bards had nut been wanting, but the Kentucky poet vsi the first since Burns who had been found worthy of the honor. Although accustomed to appear in public, he was manifestly affected in the presence of the 400 Masons, with their wives and daughters, who had gathered to do him honor. Tho Grand M: continued : . Having been selected to perform this ceremony, I request our Most Worship- fol Brother Joseph D. Evans, the oldest Past Grand Master of this State, to place the crown of lanral an the brow of the Poet Laureate of the Masonic fraternity. The poet flushed and bowed, and tho venerable Past Grand Master advanced and placed a simple laurel wreath upon his head, while the audience applauded and the organist played All hail the power of Jssu name. After waiting a long time for the applause to cease. Mr. Morris said that he consented to receive this testimonial from his brelhrem because he hoped that the Impulse of hit heart would serve in place of poetic inspiration. If the efforts of his pen had pleased the fraternity, the credit noetic to must be given not but to the industry merit, which had nerved him to study the emblems and symbols of the fnlenily and depict the poetry alicady there.
