And, !y the trey, this is about as good a lime as any fur mo tu explain the Scotch cap and military cloak story, which long since liaised into history, and can be found in ail the cyclopedias of the day. There isn't a word of truth in it. The intention was, after the reception and rade in Philadelphia, Mr. Lincoln and his party reviewing the torchlight wideawakes and bands of music, and attended hia room, on Chest- b7 d. nut street, to go by the early train to Harrishnrg. where, us in big places, a reception was to be given, and a ptocea-sio- n had in his honor, and thence direct to Washington. This plan, however, was thwarted by information brought to the Continental, and communicated, I think, first to Mr. Kingsley and subsequently intrusted to Mr. Lincoln, although the wisdom of that step was then and has ever since been doubted. The information was to the effect that the train from Harriadurg was to be thrown from the track in the hope of killing the president-elec- t, without regard to tho lives or safety of hia wife and children anda large number of notables who were them. accompanying Mrs. Eingsly e ml Lincoln and of the party, who gentlemen in chat-gwere Col. It was an anxious night with those people snd with Mr. Seward, Jr., who accompanied the detective from Washington and brought the information to the parties interested. VERY AT S. C., Oct. 20. The 1'w-liyteriSynod uf South Carolina, cm- -' Cull udi a, bracing in its niemborslilp several of the of the Smith, ha been in session at Greenville for the rut week. As it is one of Ihn four synods controlling the Southern Theulogiml Seminary in this city, its present session has been devoted principally to considering the attitude of the Church toward the teaching in the seminary of the doctrine of evolution by the Rev. James Wood-roD. D. 1 If. D, L. L. D., Professor of Natural Science in connection with Dr. Woodrow holds tint Bevelation. the creation of Adim was by evolution, and his advanced views upon this subject have created a derided sensation in the Presbyterian Church in the United Slates and iq Great Britain. The subject was formally brought before the Synod by the introduction of two resolutions by the committee on the Theological Seminary, the resolution of the minority sustaining Dr. Woodrow, and that of the minority protesting ana recommending that the professor lie enjoined from teaching hia doctrine in the seminary, because belief in evolution changes tiie interpretation of the Scriptures, becauro the view that Adam wis not formed by supernatural act of God is dangerous, and contrary to the confession of faith of the church, and because such teachings would injure the seminary, rend the church, ana should not be allowed. An exhaustive snd animated ilabate ensned, in which evolution was elaborately discussed from scientific ss well as thcdogial standpoints. The debate continued for four days and was closed last night by Prof. Woodrow in a masterly argument of nearly eight hours duration. Both resolutions of the seminary committee were voted down, and the following was adopted ly a vote of HO to 45; Jtaokvd, That in the judgment of the Synod the teaching of evolution in the Theological Seminary at Columbia, except in a purely expository manner, with no intention of inculating its truth, is hereby disapproved.
