Its s are divided into two sections, both ready to fight at a moments warning. Trouble has been brewing since the November election, and the occasion being the contest for State oGccrs grow-la- g out of the adoption of tlie constitutional amendment on the day of the lost State election, changing the day for electing State and county officers to the first Tuesday in November. In this lardy) county, William Ixeb, who has :n county clerk for several terms, was defeated at the October election. As soon as he knew of tho adoption of tho constitutional amendment, lie had bis name placed on tire ticket to be voted fog in November. He hail no opposition and received a great many votes. lie declared be was legally elected clerk, ami would retain possession of the office. Yesterday the terra fur which he had been elected expired, and William Wilson, who was chosen at the October election, appeared to take possession of the office. There hsd been rumors of trouble. Hundreds or men were on lund, but so far no trouble bad occurred. Lucb will take the nutter into the courts. If he wins it will bo equivalent to declaring the Democratic State ticket ineligible to office. There is great interest in the affair and fights were numerous. . At 1 p. m. Wilson, followed Ly a crowd, went to tbe court house, where Loeb was intrenched with his followers. After a struggle Wilson succeeded in reaching the office. Loeb ordered him out, ana a general fight took place. The office furniture was wrecked and a number of persons were badly hurt, Wilson, with his followers withdrew for consul-tatioThe attack was renewed, and in tlie fight Wilson was struck over the head by a son of Loeb, and probably fatallyhurt. Women ran screaming lo hiding places, followed by children. Tbe mayor hastily closed all liquor shops end extra police were put on duty. The court house was barricaded and a battle of bullets seemed imminent. The sheriff organ ixed a posse, charged upon the rioters, and after a bitter straggle captured tbe Guardi were mounted court house. and peace restored for the night. The opposing factions gathered at the opposite sides of town and listened to speeches, some of them incendiary in their charAn attempt was nude to get acter. and lynch him, the report circulated that Wilson was dead. A few men on each side managed to quiet the crowd. Pet-p-ie remained up all night. A renewal of hostilities is feared. The town and court house are closely guarded, and the streets are filled. COMPANY, ItSCOWOEATHlJ (tin $, lU Thrlr llosts for the Fray. cool-head- eiv Yoek. Jan. 0. -- cl Reports of XW Hampshire end Maryland iridsy, have been foiluwed by many similar reports of late from various parts of the country, and now these are succeeded by the announcement of in an earthquake shock yesterday at Tarry-towMajor Marshall II. Bright, editor of the Chrlitim of Tl'orfc, who lira at described tbe occurTarry town, rence as follows: "The earthquake look place yesterday morning at 0:00 o'clock. 1 was awake, and as 1 have observed d earthquakes before, I immediately the nature of the shock and seised my watch to time its duration. It lasted four seconds. It was a distinct, continuous vibration, like ajar produced in a bone car when stopd by the sudden application of tlie brakes. Tbe shock was clearly accompanied Lv a low not louder than rumbling noise, would be caused by a heavy cart. The bouse was shaken and tbe window rattled. When 1 attended the First Reform church in the morning, and spoke of the occurrence to the sexton, lie exclaimed that he now understood what bad before puulerl him. Not thinking of an earthquake, lie liad wondered what the shock was which lie had observed while he wus attending to the furnace in the thurcl. lie said the building was shaken. On conversing with other persons whom I met at church, I found some had observed the shock distinctly. One old lady was awakened by it. Undoubtedly the occurrence would have attracted much more general attention if it had not taken place at an hour Sunday morning when most persons were asleep. F. Auerbach & Bro. A marked change has come over the opinions of business men in Pittsburg within the ast month. A few weeks ago they looked only at the dark side of the picture, and conld see little if any hope for the future. Now (hey think they haveseenlhe worst, and that from now onward 1885 will show an improvement, until tbe volume of business is restored to its full pro lions. The indications now are that tlie iron mills and furnace of the city will not be allowed to lie idle much longer as orders are coining in more freely, ant slocks in tho mills and warehouses are very low. Among tbe firms resuming were the following: Westing-hous- e Machine Co., 50 men; Zogh & Co., 200 men; Cambria Iron Works, Johnstown, 5,000 men; Long & Co., S00 men; National Rolling Mill, McKeesport 5,000 men; Oliver Bros. & Phillips, Teiitli and Fifteenth streets, South Side Mill, GOO men; Schoenberger Mill, 300 men.
