Show Dana's Opinion of Scissors. In editing a newspaper a penis a necessary neces-sary article ; so is a pencil, inasmuch as it may at times be more convenient than a pen to write with. A pair of scissors is also necessary. But what is most necessary neces-sary is brains. Next to brains in value I estimate what we call the newspaper instinct, in-stinct, the sense of what news the people require and what discussion will be most effective. Next after this come special talent and general knowledge; and the more knowledge, general and special, a newspaper man has, the more useful he will be. But witfrall these gifts and graces he will not accomplish much unless he possesses a sense of humor and an uncompromising un-compromising love of truth and of the United States Constitution. A pair of scissors, however, is not as good as a pair of moderate-sized shears, and neither scissors nor shears can make a journalist. . Charles A. Dana, " :Editor New York Sun. |
