Show ! ' ! MORE LEGISLATION FOR UTAH. . i Some interesting reading for both i' Saints and sinners Will be found in the ; ji telegraphic columns of the Democrat ! i this evening. We refer to the anti- ;l r polygamy bill introduced in the House s i to-day by Representative Woodburn, of Nevada. It is a sweeping measure, and i v should it become law, would go far toward , i effectually disposing of the Church-and- l ! State infamy here, and the uprooting of ; that organization which teaches that its j ; members must . violate the laws of the j , , land bsfore they can hope to find favor in ; i i the eye3 of Almighty God. i As we read the provisions of this bill, " p- it is proposed to disfranchise every Mor- ';. nion in the land. This is severe treat- ! . ment, it is true, but the disease is of such a ! nature as to require the most heroic treat-' t , ment known under the Constitution. No ' ,- good Mormon can, without committing perjury, take the oath prescribed for ! ?H voters in section 2 of this bill, and it is ! t safe to say that they will not attempt to ; take it. Such being the case, the politi- i t -," cal control of this Territory must pass r into non-Mormon hands, and the era of reformation, long-looked and eagerly- ; ! wished for, will commence in Utah. 1 The preamble of this measure correctly I t '; sets forth tbe situation as it exists here, and the provisions of the bill are drawn with a view to fully cover each and ,V every evil thus set forth. Not only is it proposed to take-the ballot out of the hands of those who have so. long dis-J dis-J graced it, but it is also sought to make it impossible for those who in any way en- ; courage, aid or abet, directly or in directly, the misguided people here in , ' their criminal opposition to the laws of the land, to obtain a foot-hold here by acquiring title to the public," lands. And . ! that is just and proper. ' Under the sixth section, it is proposed i to declare void all existing poll and reg- j , istry lists, and under the supervision of ; j the Utah Commission (in this Territory) i ! hold elections which must result in plac- j !; ing in office non-Mormons only. And if j ; we do not misinterpret this provision, it ' is so drawn that, within a few short ; . ...... it months alter becoming a law, such an ; ; election may be held and the nullifiers ; ' who now hold on to office may be dis- i ; possessed. This bill does credit to Mr. Woodburn's , intelligence, as having comprehensively grasped the situation here, and we trust ; " he may be successful in pressing it through the House at the earliest possi- I i ble moment. The passage of the new ; Edmunds bill through the Senate by such ; i a large majority is evidence that this J I measure will meet with no considerable ; opposition in that body, and approval by :- the President may be confidently looked , for. . |
