Show MANNING TO RETIRE Our dispatches this morning contain the announcement that Secretary Manning Man-ning is to be appointed to the Austrian court It is true the announcement lacks official confirmation but the act if i f executed would be so full of promise to the Democratic party that every man in i i the land who believes in the future prosperity of that party would rejoice greatly thereat The one great obstacle to perfect unity between the thousands of f Democrats who delve in the earth for subsistence and the Administration is the great difference in the policy of the Government in handling the silver question ques-tion Manning is and has been of goldite tendencies and being at the head of financial affairs his actions and beliefs haye placed him and the Administration Admin-istration at enmity with the greater half of his party and if continued into another an-other campaign would assuredly result in the swamping of the Democratic candidate can-didate beyond all chance of recovery The people of America will have silver asa as-a money and its free coinage and it now looks as though the mission to Austria will be a godsend to the President affording afford-ing as it does an easy way out of his present difficulty With Manning out of the way the President could reorganize the Treasury Department and have a chance to wheel into line with the great majority of his party on the silver question and thus fuse the actual power of the party with the few millionaires who seek to benefit their pockets at the expense of the success of the Democratic party If i President Cleveland desires a reelection or the election of the Democratic nominee ii in 1888 he must come to terms with the great mass of voters who demand free I I silver and the unlimited coinage thereof I or submit the party to ignominous defeat I II There can be no medium either he favors he silver men or the gold men and serv I ing the latter he brings ruin on the party that made him The retiring of Manning from the Treasury portfolio offers the President a last chance to place himself in accord with the people and insure the I future supremacy Democratic rule |
