Show Austrian Victims of Telegraphy A cry goes through the Austrian press about Jhe overworked and underpaid vic tims of telegraphy the public officials in which department are said to be more exposed ex-posed to having their minds affected than any other class of public servants The I extraordinary statement is made that within thirteen months no less than nine of 800 manipulators have become lunatics This sad fact is attributed to the constant strain on the mind the slender pay and equally slender chance of promotion I Some fifteen years ago telegraphists in Austria after a service of twenty years were advanced to be officials of the ninth class while numbers of assistants today after having served sixteen afer and seventeen years are still in the eleventh class and even i they were raised to the dignity of an official of the tenth class would still have to be manipulators with some 1500 or 2000 colleagues ahead of them and hence with little or no hope of reposing their constantly excited constaty nerves Allusion is made to the treatment of telegraph of ficials in other countries more especially in Russia where manipulators are paid an additional annual sum of 75 for every foreign language they acquire This extra Thisexta pay stimulates them to imnrmm t1A education at the same time enabling i them to occasionally rest from the fatigue I of the service BrooUyn Eagle |
