Show DROWNED IN THE JORDAN Joijejihi IVithcrlnml the Iiisf Victim Vic-tim f o the Treacherous Whirlpools Whirl-pools of that liiver About 7 oclock last evening Joseph With erland residing at Santaquin but for sometime some-time past 1 laborer in this city for the D R G Railway Company was drowned in the Jordan river In the afternoon in company with others ho went to the river for a bath and being the first man undressed he jumped in at the confluence of the creek and I Jordan just south of the black bridge Ho drifted out into the eddy where the streams unite and could not regain the bank At first Mr Joe Hnbish who was fishing at the time just opposite and Thomas Atkins who was preparing to go in with others on the shore saw Witherland struggling and thought he was fooling when he cried out Fin drowning and went down within n few feet of them He came up three or four times and called for help Mr AtI hums jumped in and swam as fast as ho could to rescue the drowning drown-ing man but before help could avail Witherland sank out of sight It was with some exertion that Atkins managed to swim out of the swift currents which form a sort of whirlpool at that place flu gentlemen returned to town with the sad news which was telegraphed the relatives rela-tives of the unfortunate young man Last evening several parties provided with grappling hooks went in search of the body I and a number reading nn account of the I affair on 1 bulletin board in front of Bam bergers store renewed the search this morn ing with no success up this hour Joseph Witherland was a very stout and robust young man 22 years of age He was able to swim but little and in consequence of not being acquainted with the treacherous treacher-ous Jordan he should never have gone into the river I is astonishing how many per KCHIS have lost their lives in the Jordan river 4he past few years and yet an army of small l JOys and even men unable to swim continue con-tinue to venture the danger |
