Show BADGER AND BYWATER A Hot Day in the Tabernacle Oratory Ora-tory Perspiration and the game Old Stor There was a very meagre attendance at the Tabernacle yesterday afternoon compared com-pared to the gatherings of a year ago The apparent loss of interest is attributed to many causes The extremely hot weather now pervading the city has unquestionably un-questionably forced a great many to pitch their tents outside the walls of Zion insecure in-secure spots beside still waters Yesterday the audience was sprinkled with a great many visitors and it is seldom sel-dom that so large a turnout of babies is seen I being so very warm the side doors were thrown wide open to admit what little fresh air there was astir astr Several of the bishops and elders occupied occu-pied the pulpit and the old beaten path was gone over again as though a new pro gr mme was being presented to the listeners lis-teners After a hymn hy the choir Bishop Woplley followed with prayer in which gracious thanks were tendered for the many blessings enjoyed today hy the Latterday Saints who have settled here amid these mountain tops as spoken of by the prophet i Rodney Badger began the main talk of the afternoon by a few apologetic remarks re-marks and wound up his sermon with the old ole story He said he was young and inexperienced but was born and reared in Salt Lake from Mormon parents and had learned the true principles of this gospel from investigation I might look strange to an outside person for a young man to be called from the body of the house for the first time to speak but to a Latterday Saint there was nothing strange about it I is not strange that a young man born and surrounded sur-rounded as he had been in the midst of Mormonism should profess to I believe in the gospel of the Latterday I I Saints which he observed is opposed by the outside world The principles of I this gospel were revealed from God I through Joseph Smith for us to receive J I advocate defend and practice to ennoble en-noble ourselves and prctce The out J i side world do not understand these things or they would not oppose us I is easier I to believe error than truth and men practice that which degrades because it is popular rather than the principles of truth so unpopular here A person joining join-ing this people and coming here must banish all associations of former friends They must sacrifice all their means oven I life to be a true Latterday Saint The II Mormons are always happy and contented con-tented because of the revealed gospel which shall never be destroyed nor the kingdom and priesthood taken away How could the Saints of two hundred thousand strong standup stand-up firmly and defy all opposition facing prisons and death itself if the principles of this gospel were not true Conflict is not sought but if we could honorably and honesty shake the responsibility from our shoulders it would be done but we cant for we did not originate this work I the position we are in today was the result of our action it would be different and instantly cleared away but coming from God we would be cowards to shirk the fight We are not desirous of overthrowing over-throwing this or any nation but we would follow out our mission in elevating the gospel I George GK Bywater occupied a few minutes in likening the Mormons to the apostles and followers of the Savior He said the ancient disciples were the dregs of society and chosen from the lowest I ranks of le anc labor in the vineyard Today in a land of boasted religious liberty to worship according to the dICtates dIC-tates of conscience the spirit of persecution persecu-tion and tyranny is manifested This preacher took his listeners away back I through a smattering of ancient history I recounteu the customs and habits of the t Jews and Romans and closed after talking talk-ing for more than hal an hour in the i most elaborate and longwinded expressions expres-sions imaginable |
