Show I I WHO ARE THE CORRUPT ONES 7 The News of Saturday night contained this I thisThe belief that there will bo no opposi who tion not justify any man woman I is entitled will to vote in failing to perform this plain duty Our liberties are jeopardized carpetbaggers and hungry A horde of corrupt trying to blind the t officeseekers are gry and to their true interest of the people s eyos I Bocnro to themselves the holding of the pursestrings and the manipulation of the public funds The Peoples party ought to show aU of this class by tlio promptness and unanimity with which they vote for small their true friends on Monday how their ohanco is for future success The above may be answered and characterized I char-acterized as a falsehood There is but one ticket in the field in opposition to the I Peoples party and that is the Democratic f Demo-cratic ticket Upon that ticket are the names of two gentlemen who were not I p only born in Utah but are the sons oi Mormon bishops We will specify them J First is that of Mr Joseph L Rawlins Is he a carpetbagger and hungry office I seeker He was born at Cottonwood this county and has ever resided within with-in the county save when away at college i in the East His father has been foi many years a bishop in the Mormon church and there is no charge in the world that can be brought against him Mr Rawlins is a leading member It of the bar and a man of prop to erty Had Mr Rawlins chosen I cast his lot with the Peoples party it is safe to say that he could have had any office within the gift of that party At present he is the Professor of Law in i the Deseret University Such being Mr Rawlins history does it look as though he were a carpetbagger Who is William Wil-liam G Sharp nominated by the Democratic I Demo-cratic party for a Representative to the Legislative Assembly Is he a carpetbagger carpet-bagger Let us see He is a son of Bishop John Sharp and was born hi E jSalt Lake City Now who is Bishop v f JjOhn Sharp He is a bishop in the Mor f > mdn church Superintendent and Yice President of the Utah Central Railway a director in the Union Pacific Railway and Chairman of the Central Committee f of the Peoples party of Utah Territory I Mr Sharp has always been a resident of I this city except when away at the Van I Rensselaer Institute and at Columbia I College Mr Sharp was born in Utah and in Utah are all his interests whether spiritual or material But still the New I calls him a carpetbagger Mr A L Williams while not born in Utah has no < I interests outside of this Territory Here are his home his parents and his wife I and children His father also is a bisho oJ in the Mormon church and preside p in Pleasant Valley Who is Mr Joseph T Kingsbury the Democratic candidate I p for County Superintendent of Schools I Ishe also a carpetbagger a man without with-out place or respect Let us see Mr Kingsbury was born iu Salt Lake City and is a son of Mr Joseph C Kingsbury i Chief Clerk of the General Tithing Office Salt Lake City Perhaps the News never k heard i of such an office But Mr Kings I bury is not entirely unknown in the community com-munity nor absolutely unfit for the < position to which he is nominated Mr Kingsbury is Professor of Chemistry p in the Deseret University Mr Kings bury has ever resided in Utah except the time he spent at Cornell University But still the News calls such as he carpetbaggers carpet-baggers Mr Bolivar Roberts the candidate can-didate for Selectman has been in Utah I since 1850 and probably would have been f born here his parents being old time J Mormons before Utah was known but that Utah was Mexican territory at the time of his birth and the Mormons were still in Ohio at that time Mr Roberts residence here antedates that of the editor ed-itor of the New half a score of years or j more And still the News calls hIm a carpetbagger And to it is with all the Democratic candidates there not being one upon the ticket who is not I thoroughly identified with Utahs best interest in-terest and not one who has not been in Utah for ten or more years while some of them came here when mere children I These facts answer the charge of their I beinc corrupt carpetbaggers Can theN the-N WS dwell with satisfaction upon the record of the Peoples party in the matter of taxes and finances It was necessary for the Territory to a sue the exCollector of county taxes for over seienlyfur thousand dollars dol-lars His predecessor was in default eleven thousand dollars and the county a never received one cent from him or his bondsmen The exCounty Clerk is an embezzler to a large amount andhe is under indictment All these officials were a putin place by the Peoples party and r their competency and honesty in holding the public purse strings and the public funds are well shown by these facts But a it is needless to cite the numerous cases a aaiuofcorruption in this county by public officials officials elected by the Peoples party too Our city government hast a has-t Ixjen l no better than the county government I govern-ment and their whole history may be I summed up by saying that it has been L i t the history of corruption and stealing i r and the records bear out the assertion The News is very fond of charging men < 5vhodonot agree with 4t in politics and i religion men who were born in Utah I jnen who werp here before the editor of I 4h t paper quit his native shores and fore swore allegiance to the British Queen men who have more property interests in Utah than the whole editorial staff of the News I with being corrupt carpetbaggers and a horde of hungry officeseekeis It maybe may-be as well to say right here that the man who wrote the paragraph about a horde of corrupt carpetbaggers and hungry of ficeseekers trying to blind the eyes of y TL the people to their true interests and secure to themselves the holding of the public pursestrings fep i and the manipulation of the public funds is wider indictment un > fcira tfhimfi States law s and before 4 new year rolls around will most likely dwell in a felons cell Such arc the men who are charging men born and reared in Utah with being corrupt carpetbaggers It |
