We bare frequently taken occasion through the columns of the Review to call attention to the oft repeated and emphatic assertions of the Mormon lea& era that they are a peaceable and people, that they lore end reeers the Constitution of the United Slates and the free institutions of the country, and have, from time to time, exposed, the uttejr falsity of such assertions and the real motive underlying their frequent reiteration. It is a fact of peculiar significance that thesa protestations of peace and of devotion to tha Republic, by whose charity alone they have so long been .permitted to continue their persistent violations of law, are but of recent date, having developed since the beginning of lh present state trials andthe effort 'for the admission of Utah as a State. Until the theocratic rulers began to feel tha iron graspof the law closing around them, no class of people, not eren tha Southerners, during the recent rebellion, were more defiant in the expression of their hostility toward the Government, and their defiance of its Constitution and laws. A few extracts from the pnb-li- c harangues of the Mormon leaders 'will abundantly attest the truth of this law-abidi- ng I:, FOR BALE, Grant not scruple to assail the Republican tarty, on whose shoulders it places tha responsibility for all the ills with ' wbioh tbe nation is afflicted.' 8o long as there remained a possibility of decoying a Republican administration into an indorsement of the preposed admission of Utah as a State, the Herald assumed a sycophantic tone! , and demeanor toward the party by! whose votes alone the Mormon leaders can hope to igaia' adi mission.
