Tuesday Eveaiagr, Hot. 7, 1871. ing of this attempt on her husband's life, that her physicians imperatively directed licr removal from the city as the only means of saving life. She was accordingly removed to Sau Fraucisco, the fiighf producing a miscarriage, and for a time her life was despaired of. She is still lying dangerously ill. We regret the necvmsity ot making these facts public, but they are a part ofbe history of the past eventful month., and add another to the many ills for which this accursed theocracy is responsible. The reported interview between Governor Woods aud General De Trobriand, touching the parade of the Nauvoo Legion July 4ih, is, perhaps, the most fanciful sketch in tbe whole tissue of faLe-boWe chance to lie and fiction. familiar with the history of what actually trauspired upon that occasion, and do uot hesitate to assert that this ingeniously devised tale is a sheer fabrication from bcginniiig to end. and senseless To tlie stories of Judges McKean and Strickland giving partisan decisions' iu mining causes in which thy werp interested, we havejonly to say that the entire evi dcuco bearing upon these alleged malpractices, was brought before President Grant and failed to shake his confidence for one moment in the integrity of the judges. All the persuasive eloquence of iveuator Stewart nnd of Tom Fitch, who followed the President to Long Branch, big with tales of judicial malfeasance, failed to satisfy him that there was any foundation for thosu nle slanders. But turning from such stale and hack-nie- d themes as a corrupt judiciary, a Gentile Ring and packed juries," closes wiili a our valiant knight-erracolumn' of glowing apotheosis of Brigham. Bearing ill uiiud that this t -less twaddle was written before the cowardly flight of the Prophet, we are not surprised that his followers are proud of Brigham, proud of his hale olJ age, fearlessness, sagacious enterprises, attention to their wauls, and high rank amongst the great men of the time, His enterprises, we are told, pay They do indeed. speedy dividends He is a man of versatile and adiniuis he is the organizer of trativelability the industry of Utah; the ablest ex-- e utivn spirit west of the Rocky Moun bis life has been and and powerful continues ad nauseam with fulsome laudations of the man who is now fleeing from jnstice like the eravei.-heartaud cowardly criminal that ' lie is. With an eye to dramatic effect, our artist then paints a thrilling scene at the Liou House, where John Taylor, George A. Smith, Orson Pratt with his introspective eyes, Joseph Young, et id yarns omnC, valiant souls all, baked dry in the furnace of olt Mormon dangers, which they now account their glory, gave counsel to Brigham Young as to his duty. After these lamb like spirits bad discussed such Christian projects as cutting the irrigating ditches, burning the settlement., killing the Gentiles and then pnarching to Mexico, in case of Brigham's conviction, the following transpired ; Brigham Young, himself in the uf an old lion, uot uncertain that his prowess was not now a part of his nature and religion, urged that lie was promised safe conduct and fair treatment. To this old John Ta)ler retorted: So was Joseph! I saw the safe treatijient they gave him in jail ! There was an exclamation of deep (eelinjg and cry of perfidy at this and I i m writing no fancy sketch, but the stntfiiient of twn attorneys, who were Brigham himself was deeply present. moved. Perhaps the recollect ioi of his more youthful captaincy of the Mormon exod is across the altcnli plains inspired ' him With enthusiasm. Very likely. "i'hen, after a minute, Brigham closed his great square mouth and jaw, and said jcalmJy: God is in the courts as well as in the battles and marches. There will be no resistance. I shall obey the summons. Id due time he dismounted from his bngjry before the little old squalid stone stable where the United State ct?nrt meets, climbed the creaky outside stairs. and1 at his colossal, venerable appear-aucthe whole court unconsciously arose, Bar and audience. Regretting the necessity which compels us to spoil so charming' a picture of this lamb led to the slaughter, we neverthelei assert that the court did no sucli thing. We were present upon the occasion referred to, and no more was shown to Brigham than to r FISHBACK. OUTDO BL Tie Cincinnati Commercial, under dal of October 30th, contains a four- colomn phillipic in the guise of corre. -pondeuce, aimed at the Federal official. of Utah, or what the writer, burrowing e, ihv ter. a uar of our Mormon a is pleased to term the Gentile Iiiug." The monotony of four columns Iftbrvil at Billingsgate would be seme what tiresome, were it not wr thejix-quisi- te gems of fancy Lore and there sandwiched between, when the writer, Rearing the beaten track of slander so long traveled by abler pens in the iutei-es- ts of Zion, gives free rein to his Pegasus and, passing the conventional limit of facts, to which journalists of tamer spirit are wont to adhere, revels in the unfettered play of au exuberant fancy. Of course the writer prefaces with the Stereotyped panegyric upon Mormon frugality, industry and prosperity, seductive themes to Eastern correspondents who have ever come within the potential influences of the Lion House, and, though threadbare by frequent use, none the less exhilarating in their effect upon these knight-crran- ls of polygamy. Net long, however, does our valiant Don Quixote tarrj over these alluring themes. lie has donned his armor; he has mounted his Ro inattle, and with lance In poise and kindling eye he dashes the rowels into his quivering deed and plunges into the thickest of the fray. Sketching with a masterly hand a hypothetical exodus of the Mormons to Mexico, as the result of Gen tile persecutions, be hastens to point out the causes preventive of so dire a calamity as follows : eotem-porari- -- fierr-wing- ed i 1 They were saved from this act of devotion and despair by ihe abnegation of their leaders and thinkers, men who had proved ihcir resources thrice before under worse conditions of exodus. Brigham Young, the theoemtof this chart li; Daniel H. Wells, Mayor of Salt Lake city, and George Q. Cannon, an editor of influence and a man of property nnd force, appeared before the court and gave bonds to stand trial on the charge of lewd and lascivious conduct and cohabitation with divers women. Thus was Zion delivered and the pilgrimage to Mexico averted. Thus, too', we' learn that the arraignment of this grand triumvirate of sniutly rogues before the bar of justice is an act of abnegation. Ilawklhg becomes a martyr by a few skillful touches of this enchauU-r'wand, as witness the following: At the same time, the strong Instinct for peace in the Mormon counsels compelled one Thomas Hawkins, an Kng- -j liah member of the Church, to submit to I indictment, trial, nnd, if required, punishment on the ground of adultery with bis later wives, which he has doue with diguity worthy a better enu.-e.Which makes it nice for Thomas. We, who had watched the trial from its very inception, had slumbered under the hallucination that the strong arm of an unrighteous United States Marshal had been one of the potential forces in compelling Thomas to submit to trial. That the lecherous scoundrel, who, caught by his wife in fagranle delicto, tauutingly assured her that he was doing religious duties met his fata, with a "dignity worthy a better cause, may be believed by those not. familiar with the facts. But they who. like us, beard the and story of Harriot Hawkins wrongs, will svek a more fitting subject for martyrdom than the adulterous husband' who, when she lmd borne him seven children aud was then within one nioitih of confine had she went, told her that had her day aud be must have a younger woman. Want of space compels us to furlwur notice of many of tin fuulet and most slanderous attacks upon individual officers of the Government in Utah. The writer takes them up seriatim and bedaubs them liberally with the foul slime culled from the Mormon press, a twice-tol- d tale to every resident in Utah. Let it suffice to say that the bounds of decent journalism arc passed, when a sensational scandal monger seeks to throw ridicule upon so true a gentleman and to brave soldier as General Maxwell, became of his wooden leg replacing that which he lost while gallantly fighting in the Uniou army during the rebellion. ' After deluging with hi puny vials of wrath Judge McKean, Bavkin, Maxwell, Taggart, Hollister and Toohy, this new Munchauseu turns to one of the proprietors of the Review, and discourses as follows : Frank Kenyon, proprietor of the Review, a paper which has superseded the Salt Lake tribune in irriutiug the Mormons; a Montana man, aud with so little fortitude that when the indict, incut of Brigham was proposed, he sent his domestic treasures to Sin Francisco. It would ill become us in these columns to enter upon any npo'ogy for the conduct of Mr. Kenyon. We may he permitted, however, to state the facts of the cose. 1. is true that Mrs. Keuyon left this city for Sail Francisco about the tune of the finding of the indictment against Brigham Young. On , the 29th of August an attempt was made upou the life of Mr. Kenyon, by three Mormons, rained Z. Jacobs, J. The dol-la- rs small-soule- d cheap writers who come here to look at the situation are lionized by Cooper, Wells and others, rolled up to the lions den in a fine carriage, aud generally captured with a few root hundreds for their part in the dirty work. In conversation with one of these gentlemen, he told me that if the requirement was only five dollars be should feel the same as he now does, as he considered a principle of right was involved therein; and he informed me, that just so soon as he could he satisfied that our city officials were not misapplying the people's money, he should be on hand to pay over, at least, any reasonable tax that might be called for; and, 1 thiuk, from the known character of the timn, that he meant what he said. Now 1 see nothing in' this that is at nil incorreet. It is no more than right that tax pavers should kuow that what they pay as luxes, whether little or much, is being used for legitimate purposes, aud I incline to the idea that it the city officials are what they claim to be, honest men, they will forthwith account to their musters, Ihe people, agreeably to their wishes. lu speaking of Clintons (the Aider-maCourt, I was much amused the other day. It so happened (rather wonderful, of routsc) that the same case came up twice while I was there. It was that of a dealer in groceries nnd provisions, who,1 it seems, had actually refused to pay Iris license. Throughout I could look upou it iu no other light than a farce. Oil the tirst showing of the case, the defendant's counsel discovered a flaw in the indictment, which, of course, busted the thing, and resulted in the discharge of the prisoner at the I noticed that the Alderman bar. looked somewhat chagrined over the ' matter. The next witness swore to having entered defendant's store and bought and paid for a box of blacking, price fifteen cents; but what to me was more amusing than alj the rest, was when the defendant was Interogated by the Alderman as to how long he had been in business in the store he now occupied, he hesitated for a single second, and then Said that he did not remember the date when he commenced, but one thing he did remember, that he was in business when, I thiuk he said, that roan Smith (pointing to a man I supposed to be one of the police) knocked me down and thereby caused my arrest, and in court two menwere found besides Smith who perjured themselves before High Heaven and the Court.
