We quote from the Ti ibune as follows : Iu a prosecution for bigamy two mnrriagcs, one lawful the other unlawful, m unt be proved ; and the lawful wife eannot be a witness against her husband. A large proportion of the adult people of Utah were first married in far distant countries, aud the proof, without the t est imorjv of the wife, is not accessible. The polygamous marriage is a secret ceremony, and it is found to be almost, ifj not quite, impossible to extort the proof of it from the faithful. Even parents, whose daughters are reputed to be. and by everybody believed to be, living in poiygsmy, hare denied the marnage ceremony when called befere the Grand Jury aud a worn as witnesses. Rut in a prosecution for adultery, only one marriage need be proved, and the Utah statute makes the wife a competent witness agaiust her husband. She may know nothing about any polygamous ceremony of marriage, and even if she does know it, she cannot be a witness against her hnsband for bigamy ; . but she may know all about his and is permitadulterous ted to awear to it. , ' The question I ansivttvJ. .(beat art the reasoc why it.
