Show Hunger and Homelessness educating N NL L Thi v Campus Reporter The Student Life and Leadership and Service Council for the Thayne Center among other groups devoted their time last week to promoting awareness of the growing global crisis of homelessness and hunger Starting close to home however is where it begins Nov 16 21 marked Hunger and Homel Homeless ss Awareness Week Service Chair of Student Life and Leadership planned out the entire weeks week's events Monday was Battle of the Bands in the Student Event Center starting at 7 pm p.m. There were five local bands some including students' students who participated Each band had a bin allowing audience members to place canned goods into if they liked the band The winner Matt Ben Jackson received the most can donations Jacob Jensen Taylorsville Redwood Activities Vice President thought it was a huge success and a great way to kick off the week Tuesday the Will Smith movie The Pursuit of Happiness was shown all day in The Lair Free popcorn was administered with the entire weeks week's schedule stapled to each container Starting at noon on Wednesday Ashley Farmer coordinator from the Road Home spoke in inthe inthe inthe the Student Involvement Center on ways students' students can help this growing crisis All day Thursday was the service project held out in the hall in front of the Student Life Leadership office Students' Students were welcome to decorate food bank cans with provided materials from construction paper and glitter to stickers and markers All we need are hands to come i and decorate them said before the event Because some of the cans were taken to homes for senior citizens believed by decorating these boxes it would brighten up their day Lastly on Friday in the Oak Room of the second floor of the Student Center the Oxfam Banquet t was held often tries partnering with Oxfam the international confederation I whose mission is to end poverty I Every guest could donate 2 or Students Continued on S Students tU den t s learn about hunger and homelessness Continued from A Al l two cans of food Guests Guest's were also randomly given givena a card that informed them which section he or she would be sitting in Unbeknownst to them where they sat determined what food they were served Some received actual meals while others received only small bowls of rice This demonstrated the distribution of food among the lower middle and upper classes Afterward student speakers were also invited to discuss s the issues of hunger and homelessness While many students' students may not have actively participated in any of these events everyone was welcome to make canned donations The food drive put on by PALS the Disability Resource Center and Clubs Board officially ended Monday Tuesday at noon all proceeds were donated to the Utah Food Bank Each of the clubs on campus was invited to participate and rewards were offered to the club who brought in the most food items First place received to their account second place received and third received a pizza party I Student Student of the h Thayne Center for Service and Learning Jean Young You believes if the communItY community t have a an is aware and they abundance of food they I may be willing to share tha tha food 1 With 60 students students' o on on Young imagines campus brought a aleast at at if every person person- least one can of soup the tha beneficial l affects would b be 1 substantial i.
