Show Salt Lake all jazzed up f r tr I t t 4 fir 6 t 1 s i iP F Xa r tl jv q P r 1 r c. c Photo by Rob Performers at the Jazz Festival included Diane Schuur Cold Blood and Big Bad Sarah Sarah Sarah-Nielson Nielson Arts Editor The three-day three 2007 Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival was held last weekend at Washington Square in downtown Salt Salt Lake With temperatures soaring well above degrees weekend attendees of the festival managed to enjoy cool music even without cool weather The free festival was sponsored by the Salt Lake City Marathon The festival also relies heavily on donations which were located at the entrance and each food booth student Danielle Lail attended the festival for the first time I enjoyed the festival a lot I think it is so great that Salt Lake offers something like the event Its It's different from your normal festival for one it is free free but but the focus is also the music There are hardly any vendors there I think the turnout was really good I have never been before and I Iwas Iwas Iwas was really impressed I think the artists they got to come perform were top During trie tile tile- day there wasn't sic as many people attending the festival but the performers were very talented at their instruments It is nice to togo togo togo go hear good music There was wasa a wide variety of people It was great to have that many people from the community come out and listen to great music Salt Lake City local Mark Jazzed Continued on page 5 I gets Jazzed Continued from page 1 Jordan said I liked the way they set up the stages You Youcan Youcan Youcan can always find nice shady spots to chill and enjoy everything The festival had two stages the and Ellington stage with music alternating between vw A the two giving other bands a chance to set up without a large gap between music sets Festival goers enjoyed music from a variety of local and touring artists including Great Basin Street Band Jay Lawrence Quartet Dianne Reeves Eldar Cold Blood Salt Lake Alternative Orchestra Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra Great American Songbook Wood Jackstien Diane Schuur Luther Hughes Cannon Cannonball Coltrane trane Project Brian Culbertson Zone Azul Eddie Daniels Quartet Bob Anderson Sinatra Friends Fathead Newman and Company and to close this years year's festival Big Bad Voodoo Daddy played After playing the festival in 2005 they were asked back after a favorable reaction from the attendees My favorite was the Brian Culbertson band said Lail They were like jazz rock stars The sax player was absolutely amazing I h have ve never seen seena a sax player sound that good and have amazing stage presence Usually you dont don't expect that kind of performance from jazz artists You artists You expect amazing music but the performance L. L tends to be fairly calm This band had amazing music and the ability to get the crowd up from their seats and dance The festival was very hot I didn't know they were offering free water until the second day of the festival 1 I either brought water in or bought that expensive water I was able to enjoy the festival despite the heat I think the festival coordinators prepared for forthe forthe forthe the heat by offering free freewater freewater freewater water and there was also ice cream for sale as ds s w well ll as other drinks said Lail Lail This is the seventh ye year r of the festival fo founded in 2000 by Salt Lake Lake City Mayor Rocky Anders Anderson m with plans to continue annually Anderson told told the crowd his goal was for fot forthe forthe the festival to remain free freeto free freeto to the public |
