Show r I u fi r rYr N aF t h t q A r 1 h s IU bt i x 4 c d Face of Utah a Marissa Groce Grace Local Arts Staff Writer Y f ff r f f sr i lye fid v From June 30 until Aug 24 the Utah Cultural Celebration Center is holding a free exhibit titled Face of Utah The exhibit includes various local artists presenting different aspects of o Utah culture through sculptures This showcase includes work from about 50 different celebrated ed as well as emerging Utah artists Exhibit hours run Monday through Thursday from 9 am a.m. to 7 pm p.m. as well as Friday and Saturday by appointment With around 50 artists almost double the amount of artists from last years year's Face of Utah this year the exhibit features more styles of work and also more participants Steel stoneware and ceramic as well as stone and glass are just a few mediums that can be found on display And with each artist more than capable of using their mediums to create their own unique blend of culture and art there is not one bad piece displayed in this show When first entering the exhibit there is a size life-size sculpture of a bear by Michael Porter Made entirely out of steel this detailed gargantuan bear is hard to miss Many of the sculptures are animals There are cute and playful bronze sea lions and dolphins by Scott a glass turtle by Jenkyn yn Powell a delicate bronze penguin by Ursula and a breathtaking sculpture sculpture sculpture ture of a seahorse that Dahrl Thomson sculpted out of Indiana limestone Aside from animal sculptures there are also a few architectural sculptures on display Salt Lake Vortex by Kristian Merwin Mervin is one such architectural sculpture Made out of stone and glass the vortex consists of a glass structure sort of like a building that spirals upwards with three large stair-like stair slabs or rock There is also an interesting piece by Chris Coleman called callec Gear Spheres The piece consists of three globe structures created with found objects The globes are redolent of the Arcanum machine in the movie 13 Ghosts Greg Ragland's Tree People is most certainly one of the more popping eye-popping sculptures There are three Salvador esque Dali-esque tree people people large large medium and small small and and although sculpted sculpt sculpt- ed out of apple Bondo ondo steel te and ceramic e I the tree people ppl c Illi they from rea real trees An equally equall enchanting piece School 2nd Grade was created by y w. w rez ez This arrangement is made o out t of recycled y le l materials and is a sight for the eyes and even the ears earsa a screechy sound emanates from somewhere within sculpture It is an extremely imaginative piece with starfish seahorses and vibrant optic fiber-optic lights that change colors These works mentioned are only a few of the incredible sculptures that can be found all al throughout the Utah Cultural Celebration Center until the exhibits exhibit's closing day Aug 24 The Utah Cultural Celebration Center is located on 1 1355 W W. S S.
