Show Ethical void Dear Edi Editor tor Throughout my experience experience experience ex ex- ex- ex in student journalism journalism journalism jour jour- and student government government government govern govern- ment in general I have on occasion had to struggle with ethics Ethics are according according according ac ac- ac- ac cording to Websters Webster's Dictionary Diction Diction- ary the principles of conduct conduct conduct con con- duct governing an individual or a group After reading the headline in the Horizons Horizon's July 10 issue president Ex-president voids Constitution I am deeply disturbed by the fact that ex President President President dent Cameron Cooper has displayed such a disregard for ethics relating to his former ti title e. e What disturbs me the most about all of this is that Cooper waited until the very last moments of his term to declare a student ratified constitution null and void to prevent any possible rebuttal from the Student Senate He apparently lied to Carmen McDonald the senate pro protem tern tem at the time when he indicated indicated indicated in in- that he would do nothing with the laws by-laws or constitution According to the Horizon Cooper telephoned McDonald to tell her that he was not not going going to do anything I am very concerned that any anyone one person in govern- govern j r. r b. b a l H v j i ment would assume that he and he alone possesses the power to void a constitution constitution constitution tion ratified by popular vote In effect Cooper is saying that he and he alone knows better than all of the voting what is good for I strongly disagree If ethics are principles of conduct then the Constitution Constitution Constitution tion is what gives Cooper and andall andall andall all student government officials officials officials those principles by which to conduct ves If Cooper adhered to such principles he would have known that he has no authority to even attempt voiding an entire ti tion on If Horizons Horizon's article is correct correct correct cor cor- then Cooper has not only deceived the Senate and the but also his former Executive Council by implying that he pe had their full support when in fact they didn't even know what he was doing Horizon reports that he was acting solely on his own 4 My only hope is that ethics will prevail and the along with the new Executive Council will let their voices be heard concerning concerning concerning con con- Coopers Cooper's conduct I hope that they have ethics f- f Signed Dan Metcalf Metcalf Member 0 |
