Show In In the Lexicon Of Y Youth uth T There rhe here i Is iNo No Such Word rd As Fail By Jean Holyoak IN THE LEXICON OF YOUTH THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS FAIL When 1 I first heard that statement I wondered why youth had a corner on not failing The second question in my mind was Who are the youth anyway So I 1 checked the dictionary and found some interesting definitions definitions- definitions definitions-definitions definitions that took on new meanings when applied to my experience at Youth are defined as having a youthful appearance appearance appearance ap ap- being fresh and vigorous When I consider the students on this campus they are fresh vigorous and youthful in ap ap- It is Is' especially Interesting to note when you look at the wide variety of youth we have here There 18 are year old youth There are year old and youth both men women who are single parents supporting young children child and nd there are year old year old y youth uth J I have noticed all p of us have the appearance ap ap- 1 L. L of y yH youth H the f freshness p and and n vigor of off f youth We have have totor to or we were re late for class 1 t Another definition of youth is that it 1115 is the early stage or growth of anything or an early period of development I doubt there is anyone on this campus that would not fit the description There are budding English teachers elementary teachers mechanical engineers welders social workers carpenters carpenters carpen carpen- tens secretaries secretaries' travel agents businessmen Were We're all aU sprouting into new We are all in the stages of early development This must be certain evidence that aU all of us are re youth Youth Is also the fact or quality of being young oung I 1 have noticed while I have been on this campus that we are all young I have never had a distinction made by anyone no matter what age about my youth or lack of it it That has to be one of the nicest perks in ingoing Ingoing ingoing going to this his sch school no no l one here has has has' caught op 0 to the fact that there are age differences These people haven't figured out yet that we weare weare weare are no not all aU Uthe the same age That could be good or bad bu when it comes to students treatIng treating treat treat- Ing ea each h other other oer I In this ma manner ner not nothing r g but gr great at good can come of it Generation gaps arent aren't heard of here Given then that we are all youth the statement statement statement state state- ment I read at the beginning In the lexicon vocabulary of youth there is no such word tas as fail we must take a look at the fact that ewe we be believe we we cannot fail fall If we are all ll youth and youth subscribes to that idea then we cant can't fail Right Let me tell you about He cant can't fail Hes He's been very visible on this campus for the past two years You have no trouble spotting sporting him hes the one with the steel crutches sticking way out in front of him He wont won't mind if I talk about him He knows I Ilove Ilove love him but he doesn't know why I do Id I'd like to share that with you now is about tall He was born with cerebral palsy so his crutches are necessary for him to use all his life And when he gets going he really strides with those things He can campus In no inno no time at all Im I'm one of these people who worry orry a aJ alot J lotI l lot t i 1 worry about m most mst st eV everything and when I 1 I dont don't have something to worry about I worry about that too Im I'm also Very sensitive to rny tuy y friends like and wonder if I 1 could meet the challenges they meet One day I Iwas Iwas was going to class and heard call my name It was not one of my better days I was feeling pretty blue But I 1 stopped and cheerfully chatted with me for a minute and then said Well Jean Ive I've got places to go and things to do See ya and went striding off with those huge crutches Since then Ive I've thought about having places to go and things to do probably hasn't been alerted to the fact that he could fail Hes He's going to be a counselor so he can help other handicapped people Hes He's also determined to be the first handicapped astronaut and he will be if I know Ive I've learned a new meaning for the word fail I used to think It was having a rough time or taking leBut But Ive I've learned its it's not getting up p after youve you've taken the tumble jIt's j- j Its It's giving up when times g get t tough Its It's qui ting before the jobs job's done Tumbling isn't th V failure Bad times arent aren't failures Ive I've v lar-v from fellow students in every class l 1 Ive I've i a tended that we all have hard times But M tt dont don't give up There are an da days s 's uh when n if vu we c cz just make it to the next class weve I has hart a I vi vt tory Cory There are times when the most imps imp tant work we ever do in a class is to listen u tc t V fellow students student's plea for understand understand-n hl n Never have ve I been in a situation where hert I ha had more marl emotional support and ment than I 1 have had at this college from c cing c- c ing faculty and students alike ahk No in our vocabulary there is no sue sin word as fail Weve We've learned lessons of p tie tience nee support worth self confidence confidence- are characteristics of people who do not fai who are winners And as youth we want keep on winning After all once youve you've h. h a taste of winning Its It's hard to give i it u Weve We've got pl places c to go d. d h ng jo to do Ai At we know no such word as fail ail |
