L J T r We wont won't take it any more Dear Editor All the doubts I had about the integrity of the Executive Council and the Student Senate were confirmed at the recent forum regarding their proposed constitutional changes When asked why they didn't seek student input on what sort of constitutional v changes we want they first claimed they had and then when no students at the forum could testify to that the Executive Vice President dismissed it by saying that the percentage of students asked would be During this forum forum conveniently conveniently held only one day before the elections began began- student members government consistently h emphasized that they do not sit in their offices offices offices of of- devising diabolical exploits to perpetrate perpetrate perpetrate per per- upon the But this is just an evasion of the issue for the problem is that they are in those offices being nurtured by bythe bythe bythe the cradles of power rather than out in the thereal thereal thereal real world with the rest of us finding out what we want them to do The Student Senates Senate's deviations are understandable understandable understandable un un- un- un since they are appointed and lack any electoral mandate But the Executive Executive Executive tive Council is elected and their stray from the will of those whom they were chosen to represent is inexcusable and seen by 1 many manyas as treasonous If anybody in the Focus Party has the nerve to run in the coming elections I will Editors Editor's Note Letters to the editor and guest editorials express express express ex ex- ex- ex press the opinions of the authors and not necessarily ly those of the Horizon The Horizon encourages submissions o of f words or less and we reserve the right to edit to that length Articles without a name will not be printed We reserve the right to refuse articles for any reason specifically those that may be libelous defamatory or obscene be blown away If our so-called so representatives representatives representatives had any idea what their constituency constituency constituency con con- was vas thinking they would know that there are constitutional changes that could benefit the changes that unlike unlike unlike un un- un- un like the present ones have nothing to do with making the centers of power more comfortable The Constitution could be changed to require an elected Student Senate which would have the power to override any Executive Council allocation of the of our student fees controlled by them This would put checks and balances on onan onan onan an Executive Council that spends on clocks And finally the 12 credit hour requirement for students seeking a position in student government could be reduced to eight credit hours since 60 of this quarters quarter's are time part-time students and deserve a arole arole arole role in the process which governs them Because all of these changes threaten the monopoly of power so enjoyed by the present office holders they will win not spearhead spearhead spearhead spear spear- head such improvements It is up to us then to force our will win upon them The petitions will win be circulating by the time this is published One way or another the will restore integrity to its govern govern- ment Tim Lovato Homosexuals have unalienable rights Dear Editor The letter submitted by Charlotte White shows that she understands little about gay people She says that gay people are not private flaunt their sexuality as if it is the only purpose in their lives Untrue Most gays in Utah are areso areso areso so afraid of people like Charlotte that they live in the closet and do not tell ten anyone about their sexual preference Some gays are MARRIED and have CHILDREN If you doubt that Charlotte ask the police what the profile is for most people arrested in the parks for solicitation for sex The reason there are protests and rallies is to let the population know that gay people are citizens of this country just like anyone else We pay taxes just like you do Charlotte but we are not given the same considerations as straight people When we want to form a legal bond in a relationship we cant can't do that We cannot get the benefits a straight married couple can get Yet you say that we demand funds to support our sexual preference Government social programs are mostly geared to straight families There are no provisions for a gay person who has a lover to be considered a family We only want what we are entitled to as citizens of this country If you think that is selfishness so be it Yes we are a minority but we are a big there minority-there are 20 million of us in the US U.S. alone How much do think that translates into tax revenue Our taxes could probably support Utah for years Why shouldn't we demand more money for AIDS research research research re re- re- re search You still think it is just a gay disease Most people who have tested positive for the AIDS virus will not give this information out for fear of hate and discrimination There are probably three times any estimate you have for known cases 1 because of the stigma attached People who have cancer can 1 JI 1 L 0 discuss UI U their meir Ul disease t freely because mere Inere is no stigma at at- You give figures about the survival rate for cancer Some cancer deaths are related AIDS-related but not reported as AIDS i which makes your figures inaccurate All aids infected people die There is no survival rate for AIDS d j Informed people know that the AIDS virus is infecting more straight people than gay people now This will win continue continue continue con con- because schools have such inadequate sex education and because of drug abuse by heterosexuals 1 Gay people have modified their sexual behaviors to prevent more viral transmission but not our lifestyles Who do you think started the safe sex movement anyway The gay community did the people tired of seeing friends die from this horrible disease You maintain there is enough attention attention devoted to AIDS now Every other death-causer death you mentioned such as cancer and starvation has some survivors There is some cure if caught soon enough There is nothing that will prevent an AIDS patient from dying We must find a cure for this disease Research on AIDS benefits cancer research therefore more people will survive cancer as a result We are doing our part to stop the spread of this disease Are you Charlotte No Why dont don't you call the Utah AIDS foundation and become better informed Youve You've a lot to learn If you are trying to attach some kind of religious slant to this it is irrelevant when it comes to civil rights The Constitution guarantees that Yes Charlotte I took your letter personally I am HIV
