There are several exam examples pIes of the schools school's disregard concerning concerning concerning con con- our environment The paper wasted and the lack of specialized recycling t bins available proves the colleges college's unawareness of the common sense procedures needed to benefit our world Without everyone's cooperation our environment environment environment environ environ- ment and our childrens children's environment environment environment en en- will sink into unlivable lows to the point of irreversible damage Gran Granted ted not everyone is going to make an extra effort in every aspect as far as the earth is concerned But I feel it is the schools school's responsibility to provide accessible accessible accessible ac ac- ac- ac resources for those willing to do their part I personally personally personally per per- cannot think of a better better better bet- bet ter place to promote recycling paper nor getting students started with good habits to carry carryon on at home horn The recycling bins available available available avail avail- able are great to see but are too inaccessible They also need to be bemore more specialized We need paper plastic and nd aluminum bins readily available available available avail avail- able in highly trafficked areas With th the college influence influence influence in in- fluence the Ule students could be pushed in a more responsible responsible responsible sible direction be bettering our chances for a livable future Charmaine Christensen Homosexuals have no rig right ht Dear Editor Homosexuals a are e selfish Not for the fact they engage in sexual relationships with members of the same sex but for fot the fact they want everyone else to know what they do to accept what hat they l' l do and to financially support what they do Gay people are not private people The majority flaunt their sexuality as if it is the only purpose in their lives How often do heterosexuals storm the streets and government government government govern govern- ment offices declaring their sexuality and demanding funds fund to support their sexual preferences One of the main reasons I believe homosexuals are selfish selfish selfish self self- ish people is th the fact they are continually demanding funding funding funding fund fund- ing for AIDS research The majority of people afflicted with this disease are gay men According to the Utah State Health Department as of Mar 1 there are people in Utah who now have the AIDS virus Nationally Nationally Nationally Nation Nation- ally there are known cases of AIDS total Compare those figures to ones released from the American Cancer Society Society estimated estimated for fot 1 1991 91 people in Utah will b be f diagnosed with cancer o of those 1800 will die ie More people in Utah are dying of cancer every year than pe people ever diagnosed wit with AIDS in Utah Nationally National- National ly I y- y yest est estimated I mat e d for 1 1991 9 9 1 people will be diagnosed with cancer of those will die Compare Compare Compare Com Com- pare those figures again In one year dying of cancer and AIDS patients total According to the Department Department Department Depart- Depart ment of Health and Human Services funding from the government for AIDS research research research re re- search in Utah was Nationally was funded towards AIDS Yet large groups of mostly homosexuals continue to demand more federal funding funding funding fund fund- ing without modifying their lifestyles to keep from spreading spreading spreading spread spread- ing the disease Worldwide people are dying of starvation every year and nationally women are diagnosed diagnosed diagnosed nosed with breast cancer every year Of those will die My point is AIDS is receiving sufficient attention presently And the main push for more is coming from the gay community who cares about nothing more than what affects them and their lifestyles White Student government government-a a anew new ew song song and dance I IDear Dear Editor It is amusing to see ho how w quickly the student government government government govern govern- ment changes their song and dance when things arent aren't going the way they want them to They now want to extend the deadline for th the e Constitutional change petitions petitions petitions peti peti- from March 7 as stated by the Director of Student Activities Gordon Wilson inthe in inthe inthe the March 6 Horizon to this quarter Dont Don't they understand what their inability to get the needed signatures by the original date means If the changes the student government government government govern govern- ment wants were desired bythe by bythe bythe the there would have been no difficulty getting getting getting get get- ting the required signatures The 1200 signatures President Mehr claims they have arent aren't even enough to fulfill the required 10 percent In the March 6 Horizon the n number umber was was' reported to be 1400 Because it itis is now this quarter rather than last ast quarter that the student government intends to hold the Constitutional election which is required to implement the changes the number will be even more than 1400 due to growth Of the 1200 signatures they claim to have those of students who are not enrolled enrolled enrolled en en- rolled for spring quarter would have to tobe be eliminated But this is not even necessary at this point beca because se they to to editor Editorials l I s gar a es' es s for any s ci calla i 1 e 4 d fanu tory o r obscene dont don't have the required signatures signatures signatures sig sig- natures period In the March 6 Horizon article Gordon Wilson said that if the 1400 signatures were not gathered by March 7 the changes would be likely to be put on hold until next year They did not get the required signatures signatures signatures signa signa- tures by that date nor do they have them at this point and yet they plan to hold the Constitutional election April 11 and 12 Such an election would be bea a violation of the very Constitution Constitution Constitution Con Con- it is intended to change and if it takes place the integrity of the student government will be totally destroyed By the way who is counting counting counting count count- ing the signatures on these petitions We know the Executive Executive Executive Ex Ex- Councils Council's record o on n counting votes and this thi s knowledge alone justifies justifies' independent independent independent in in- dependent verification of th the e numbers Without this we dont don t know if they even have th the e 1200 signatures The irony in them violating violating violating violat violat- ing the Constitution in order orde r to change it amazes me I Ithe If f ft the student government cant can't t even abide by their ow own n regulations then they have sacrificed any claim t to o legitimacy T They ey must think thin k the is too stupid to tc realize this John Hofeling Parking situation angers student Dear Editor Im I'm really angry with th the e way the he campus handles th the e parking situation here giving givin g the professors all the close parking spaces and leavin leaving g students walking a goo good d country mile to the needed neede d destination I think they should put all the fa faculty parking in one area and leave the rest for the students Also the security ought to stop giving parking tickets to students especially when it snows and you cantsee cant can't cantsee cantsee see if youre you're parked legally or not Eric Western Athletic Conference Dear Editor With the Western Athletic Conference regular basketball season finally over regional season post-season tournaments around the country as well as the WAC follow in full swing Being an avid sports fan for many years I must ask the question why If regional sea post season post on tournaments are to declare the true conference champions champions champions cham cham- why have a regular season only to find out in the end that just because you won the most regular season games you are not the true champions until you play those same teams in a final tournament Isn't taking first place throughout the entire entire entire en en- tire regular season valid proof that you deserve to have the label Conference Champions Champions Champions Cham Cham- The Running Utes of the University of Utah not only deserve the WAC title but proved so d decisively throughout the regular season BYU deserves the WAC title no more than any other team in the WAC This w would uld hold true no matter who won the regular season whether it was a Utah team or not Could it be that these games are held to generate revenues for corporate advertising advertising advertising adver adver- firms just so a few more games can be added to the agenda Certainly the athletes do not benefit from these extra games A thirty- thirty game season is more than enough to take the wind out of college students who must also keep up on their studies and succeed The genuine of sports has taken a backseat backseat- to the big business that sports generates Sporting events like post season tournaments are are so commercialized that by bythe bythe bythe the time th the event takes place I dont don't even eyen want to be a par par- These diversities leave abad a abad bad taste in my mouth
