| Show 7 r N I F i A iy i- i J S S y S N S 0 f it i ft i c W WJ J f b t L a aLi i x ft fY J r p F if 1 4 s ii Photo courtesy of C Dean of 0 Death As part of Halloween students were educated on the mind of a killer By Crystal Karpakis Community Editor Jeffrey Dahmer Ted Bundy Ed EdGein EdGein Gein Gem Charles Manson I am sure most if not all of you recognize recognize recognize rec rec- these names and cringe with disgust thinking of the gruesome gruesome gruesome grue grue- some actions associated with them Most of us would be terrified terrified terri tern fied fled to study the morbid and disgusting disgusting disgusting dis dis- gusting minds of these infamous serial killers But not Dr James Alan Fox Last week Salt Lake Community College welcomed Dr Fox with open ears and dropped jaws In light of Halloween Dr Fox took students through the twisted psyche of many of the worlds world's most notorious ous murderers Dr Fox has been researching the motives and actions of serial killers since 1980 and has made appearances on such shows as Oprah and Donahue He has also worked on a number of serial murder cases and is so experienced experienced experienced in his field that USA Today named him The Dean of Death Some of you may be wondering wondering wondering wonder wonder- ing why someone would have such a fascination with murder Well ask yourself the same ques ques- tion Most people though sometimes sometimes sometimes some some- times hesitant to admit it are interested in murder According to Dr Fox its it's not wrong to have those feelings actually its it's normal normal normal nor nor- mal for people to be fascinated with murder because its it's strange and bizarre awake at Most of us dont don't lie night worrying about being abducted by a serial killer Its It's so extraordinary so unusual that to well be most of us it might as fiction says Dr Fox However he does understand there is a line you do not cross perhaps into obsession but for the majority just innocently curious curious curious curi curi- of us we are ous and curiosity is not a sin We know exactly what to look for in a serial killer right We know they have grown up in a See KILLER on page 2 THE MIND OF A KILLER broken home and tend to be bizarre in appearance Wrong According to Dr Fox serial killers look and act like average everyday people Perhaps like the person sitting next to you in class or the cashier taking your money at the grocery store Dr Fox revealed many of the myths associated with serial killers These people are not always brought up in dysfunctional dysfunctional dysfunctional families nor are they lon lon- ers Some have lots of friends and are quite attra attractive tive Most are very smart and have been through many years of school Currently statistics show the majority of serial killers are white heterosexual males in the or They tend to have havelow havelow havelow low self-esteem self work alone and attempt to kill based on strange fantasies But not all serial killers fit this norm nonn 20 percent of serial killers work in teams usually two males such as the Washington DC D.C. snipers and very few in male-female male teams Five percent are women very commonly nurses who use dead dead- l ly sedatives to inject into their 1 victims 1 According to Dr Fox many serial killers will dehumanize their victims by targeting prostitutes prostitutes prostitutes medical patients and the homeless to convince themselves j that the act so bad Some r will target people who remind them of another person in their j life or the type of person they arc attracted to j jarc In Theodore Ted Bundy's case he targeted his victims by a resemblance to his mother Some I say it was because he wanted to kill her but it just wasn't 4 ble Never t the Never e his victims J were attractive young women 1 with similar h hair color color r-color parted down the middle Most of his victims were found on college campuses which is fairly common cornmon corn com mon among serial murder cases r But not to worry Dr Fox reassures reassures reassures reas reas- us the odds of an encounter with a serial killer are slim to none He says The chance of being killed by a on head-on collision collision collision colli colli- sion with a dear is t far r greater than by a serial killer Not to say Bambi is more dangerous than Bundy but the probability is very small But it never hurts to tobe be caution C O |
