Show I I I Little Fish Fishi i j i By I I had the good fortune to do some travelling around the I western mid-western states recently and even more good fortune to stop over in a typical small western mid-western town Typical Typical Typical cal at least on the surface But after only a couple of hours I realized it was different I had always thought small western mid-western towns were full of friendly old folks happy children and nice dogs Here the people all looked like they ate lemons for breakfast and their rich uncle died without without mentioning them in his will I started asking questions like Why are folks so happy around here and My Isn't this a friendly place Always Always Always Al Al- ways I got the same response Ask Sunrise Logically i the next question was Who is Sunrise The uThe mayor came the sarcastic reply So I went to see Sunrise the mayor Inside the town hall sat two men in wide brimmed hats pointed shoes and sun glasses The receptionist greeted me with one of those too sweet-but-not-too-bright smiles She was a pretty girl of about twenty Which seemed odd because everyone knows that aunt Matilda works for the mayor in any small western mid-western town The place reminded reminded reminded re re- minded me of the story of a big fish in a small pond Stepping inside the mayors mayor's office I was greeted by a atypical atypical atypical typical small western mid-western town mayor A short stocky red-faced red man in a typical gray western mid-western mayors mayor's suit After introductions and some casual chit-chat chit I asked him about the name Sunrise Well he said my motto is You got to get up early to beat the sunrise and it just sorta became my nick Once that was out of the way I mentioned the mood of the people He shrugged indifferently and said uA Aw w they're just a bunch of sore See they elected me to the town council and after the mayor resigned I was appointed to his job And Ive I've done a right good job if I do dosay dosay dosay say so myself Why should they be angry over that I asked went on that aint the whole story See I felt that we dont don't need no local police so I decided to get rid of them It was a good decision too if I do say so myself I figured if I could get rid of them then I could get even I mean I could get the county police in here the people approve of your decision I asked Well sure they did he bellowed Then UThen why are they angry Well now when I say they approved I mean deep I down inside See they think they dont don't approve but I II I know what's best for them Did they let you know how they felt Sure but that's just because a few trouble-makers trouble stirred them up Why they even went to the trouble to get getup getup getup r up petitions and so many folks signed them that I found it necessary to stop trying to do things by the books and put my plan to work |
