The one I quickly tagged as boss was short and fat and built like a gorilla. The other two were tall, slim chihuahua type-.;They were brothers or could pass for it. ' Muy bravo, amigos," I was a that greeted them, beautiful shot. But Im afraid youve just ruined my dinner. Sorry, said the gorilla, but were here to invite you to dine this night at our ranchero . . . complements of our Capitania. It just couldnt be her, I just couldnt be that lucky so soon. Though, the way he pronounced the word capitania indicated their boss was a woman. It just couldnt be the one I was looking . for, but there wouldnt be any harm in taking a look-see- . Many a time before Id dined in outlaws hideouts. Con gusto, amigos, your invitations accepted. I paddled the little eight-foplywood boat ashore, stepped out and beached it. Please be so kind as to lead the way to your rancho. That old trick failed to work. Those bearded renegades werent so dumb, for old gorilla said, you just walk ahead of us amigo, and well tell you which direction to travel. And no funny tricks. Just remember how your fishing plug flew. That last remark wasnt necessary, for I was filled with curiosity and didnt care to leave the world before I found out what was awaiting ahead. ot When do I start? Whenever youre ready, El Puma. Youre still your own boss as ever. Ive always given you a free rein and youve always used sound judgment on a mission. Well, Phil, Ive got my plane , equipped with two weeks supply of food, and other necessary items. Ill gas up in the morning and have the motors checked and take off the next d&y. Ill stop somewhere en route and refuel again then fly on to my destination. One good thing . . . I had that plane built, for land onH urotpr While' Im already in the vicinity of that lake, Im going to do a little fishing. Theres . We climbed a winding, steep trail among the boulders for a trying ten minutes, then we came mesa. onto a small boulder-strew- n What a surprise I received. Those boulders turned out to be the art of a master craftsman. They were adobe covers. I had to smile in appreciation of such wonderful art. It was no wonder Id failed to spot it from the air, for whoever had bossed that construction job knew just what they wanted. Be seated and make your- self at home, said old gorilla, indicating with a nod of his head several wicker chairs. La Capitania will make an appearance just a few minutes before dinner. Well, Id come to that bridge, hadnt I. But, I thought, filling and biting my stubby pipe, if this woman turned out to be Dorotea, it was going to be one helluva haphazardly crossing. Five heavily armed men stood between the bridge and me. Also there stood a good chance of a few more hidden from my keen roving eye. But thanks to the saints, for old gorilla and his pals hafi made one mistake. Theyd forgotten to frisk me. I still had those twin short colts, resting easily under each arm beneath my jacket. If the atmosphere got too heavy, I certainly was aiming to give a good account of myself by taking a few of them into the land of the happy hunting ground. I intended, if it was Dorotea, shed be my first target. "Did you know that Bank of Salt Lake is open 'til 6 and pays Daily Interest, too?". En route to my destination, I tried to figure out if I did find I refueled at Santa Barbara then flew on. I covered the area where the bandits were supposed to be holed up. I flew low, straining my eyes for the slightest indicatipn of life, but no luck, not even a wild animal. So I decided to set down on the alke and catch a big mess of fish for my supper before dark. Id been down about twenty minutes and fishing for five as I cast the tarantula beneath some shady vines. It barely touched the water till it was lifted a good two feet into the air. I didnt have to wait for thev sharp crack that followed immediately to tell me that it was caused by a rifle slug. I glanced shoreward and saw three of the toughest looking renegades Id ever laid eyes on, all sporting two 45 s on their NEWS Railroad Co. tracks, bounded by the Lakeside Mountain Range on the east and Floating Island on the west.
