Show 1 1 The Salina Sun, Wed., 8 January 20. 1988 DURING THIS WEEKS ACTION Wolves will take on The Delta Rabbits fell to the North Sevier W olves last week in NSHS boys basketball action, but Beavers were too the state-rate- d sly and came away with the win. North Sevier showed poise throughout the game against Delta, on Friday, according to Coach Craig Gladwell. Instead of the third quarter blues, the Wolves came d out and actually outran and the Rabbits by 7 points. This was the momentum needed going into the stretch, but the finish was not over yet. Down the wire North Sevier found themselves behind by one. Delta had the ball and was playing in a spread out stall offense. The Wolves finally fouled with 22 seconds on the clock. Dleta shot the ball, missed, but rebounded and went back into their stall offense. North Sevier again fouled. This time they rebounded the missed foul shot and called a time out with 17 seconds left on the clock. During the time out they discussed what they would do if they rebounded or didnt rebound the foul shots that would come. As it turned out, Delta missed the foul shot again, North Sevier out-score- . So.Sevier-Gunniso- n rebounded and brought the ball down for the last shot. We didnt take an open shot with six seconds left on the clock. Corbin Partridge forced a shot with three seconds and missed, but Jason Nielsen was on the boards, caught and put the ball back up at the buzzer and it was good, Coach Gladwell noted. The W olves defeated Delta. Brandon Kiesel lead the Wolves with 16 points. Steve Christensen was next with l One of the main differences in the game wre the foul shots attempted by each team. Delta had shot 21 by half time, and the Wolves had shot none. By the end of the game Delta had shot 36 times from the line while the Wolves had shot only 9. I believe this shows we played quite well against Delta. Theyh went to the line many more times than we did, but we outscored them, said Gladwell. We stressed patience on offense, waiting for the good shot, no panicking that seems to only get the score more lopsided and things seemed to fall into place for the team, he continued. Saturday nights game was a between the Wolves '""h and the Beaver Beavers. Gladwell was still pleased with the performance of his team. Beaver began the game in a man to man defense, but North Sevier at the jumped into the lead beginning. The Beavers changed defenses to a zone and this frustrated the W olves to the point that they finished the first quarter went down the court and missed their shot and then Beaver scored at the buzzer to Fush the lead to 9. Jason Nielsen lead the team with 13 points. Corbin Partridge was next with 10. Due to the tight zone most of the shots wre taken from the perimeter as they couldnt get the ball in to the big men. Beaver outrebounded the Wolves The W olves will play South Sevier away, on Wednesday, and then will host the Gunnison Bulldogs on Friday in a home game. This will be the first matchup of the year for South and North Sevier. They have been improving each week, and it will be a tough game for us, said Coach Gladwell. He is concerned about the outcome of the two games this week as North Sevier is now 2 in their games that go towards region seating. We are going to stick with the thing that are working for us, Gladwell emphasized. He feels the last two games have shown more team togetherness and team play, and an attitude that has even flowed over into the third quarter. 9-- 4 trailing 19-1- From there it was a catchup We ballgame for the Wolves. began playing with a patience offense and passed the ball well, said Gladwell. By the end of the third quarter the W olves were only down by five points, still in the 34-2- 9. game. Gladwell explained that the fourth quarter was back and forth. They were able to cut the Beavers lead to 4 then it would be pushed to 8 and then baqck. The Wolves had their chance to narrow the gap, and also missed a three pointer. Better control in any of these situations would have made a difference in the game. Going down the line the Beavers made a basket after a foul by North Sevier t break up their stall offense. They made the two shots going ahead by 7.
