Show r I 4 The SunNews, Wed January , 20, 1988 Book of Mormon is now printed in 80 languages The Book of Mormon, a centuries old volume of Christian scripture viewed by the Church of Saints Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y as a companion volume to the Holy Bible, is now published in 80 languages. The book was translated from a Reformed Egyptian into English in the early 19th century by Joseph Smith, first prophet and president of the church. Church translation officials say the book, which now has the subtitle, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, was translated into six new languages during 1987, Akan, Papiamento, Pohnpeigan, in Tag-aloTrukese and Zulu. It has also been publishd in modem day Greek. Akan is spoken in Ghana by some three million people. There are about 5,000 LDS members in the country. The papiamento language is spoken in the Dutch controlled islands of the Lesser Antilles Curacao, Aruba, and Bonaire. Zulu is spoken by 7 million people, most of them concentrated in southeastern South Africa. The Church has a Zulu branch in the town of Kwamashu and some 14.000 members throughout So. Plesant. years of Scouting The Church of Jesus Christ of Saints, sponsor of the largest number of Scouting units m the U.S. will observe its 75th anniversary as an official Boy Scouts of America sponsor on Latter-da- y Sunday, February 14, 1988. A commemorative program has been set for 6 p.m. that evening in the Tabernacle on Temple Square. The program will be televised live via satellite to another 1,800 LDS gatherings around the country. The Church sponsors some 23.000 scouting units, including more than 300,000 Scouts, and 120.000 Scouters in those units.
