There are presently 95 Aurora residents who have library cards at the Salina City Library. There has been much research on the pros and cons of the issue, however, the concept at NSHS is different from most. . instead oi registering students for 8 classes, the eighth period is set as student-teache- r contact time, where those having difficulty in any of their seven daily classes, may use the 8th period to meet with the teachers and obtain personal help in the class. The program does require a high level of responsibility from the student, however. For example, a student having a difficult time in algebra should use the 8 th period for assistance in algebra. Some students, however, not liking the class in the first place, do not opt to go into it for another hour during the day They instead choose one of the other options A hour, each class during the day is shortened, making enough time A few students have abused the 8th period arrangement by wasting the time, and some of the staff members are worried about this problem, Smith noted. Ideas are being developed that will help make the project more for the 8th period class. Smith notes that the computer, which makes 'he scheduling and followup of the program, is a very efficient tool. IPs great advantage is that it permits teachers to spend their time with the students instead of behind the desk with paper and pencil analyses of w'he-r- e the students should be during 8th period The computer instantly shows teachers and staff where each so student is having problems, that bth teacher and student time can be used more efficiently responsive, and should help the student realize the value of this extra opportunity to receive personal help. The 8th period day is not a daily occurrence. It is held at least once a week, and if teachers feel that the need is greater, it is scheduled more often. It was brought to our attention that the SUN had mistakenly identified two members of the new Salina City Council. The SUN had said that Xarren Glover and Elton Tayloi had been sworn into office; whereas, Mrs. Glover had actuallv defeats Mr. Taylor in the November election. Our apologies to both. Also, in listing the new City Council for Aurora, we listed it incorrectly. It should read, Terry Heath, Gary Mason and Royce Mason.
