Show The Salma Sun 12 Thursday, October The Salma Sun It Makes Cents five-year-o- rs . This Oct. the 120th anniversary of the founding of Salina. Bryant Burgess brought the fact to the attention of The Salina Sun by bringing in the Oct. 4, 1963 issue of The Sun which contains many stories concerning the centennial of Salina. The lead story is Hanning Complete on Centennial Finale. Here are some news briefs from the 1963 Sun: Final preparations are underway for the Salina Centennial Celebrat- ion Oct. ,17, and committees are hustling as they make certain the event will be a fitting climax to a year-lon- g activity that marks the 100th founding. Mrs. Wilma Sorensen, heading the program that will be presented month-specific- Vi: A friend of ours had a heart attack and lay unconscious for over an hour until her husband got home from work. Her frightened chUd, having tried unsuccessfully to dial the only number she knew, her grandmother's, just sat there by her mother and cried the whole time. Had she known how to get help there promptly, our friend might have been on the way to complete recovery today instead of a semiinvalid for life. This incident alerted us to the need to teach our what to do in such an emergency. We glued pictures of their grandparents and several other people to call, with telephone numbers underneath in large, clear print and had our children practice dialing the numbers. Our neighbors did the same thing, except they used a photo cube for their emergency directory. Frances Scranton, Los Angeles Dear Vi: I wonder if your readers know you can freeze whole lemons. We like having fresh lemons on hand, so I keep a supply in the freezer all the time. Put them in whole and use as needed just as you would fresh lemons. Lael Wilkinson, St. George I tried this and was delighted. Now, instead of squeezing a batch of juice to freeze in ice cube trays when lemons are down in price, Ill just freeze them in their own little yellow containers. Another bonus, too: You know how dipping lemons in boiling water releases the juice. Well, freezing does (lie same thing so that they are actually juicier and better than ever. Thanks for sharing this helpful idea with us, Lael. Dear Vi: When baking fruit pies, I pin a wet brown bag around the pie tin. As the pie bakes, the heat shrinks the paper so that it forms a tight collar that keeps the juice from spilling out. Denise Danvers, Evanston, Wyo. A few years ago, a reader got us all excited about baking turkeys and pies in brown bags. It was a mar Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sampson wish to announce the marriage of their son, Allen Earl Sampson, to Shelly Mae Hatch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.; Donald Hatch, Murray. . They were married Saturday, Oct. ' 1$ in the Murray 14th ward chapel. - Those attending from Salina were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sampson, Roland Crane, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jensen. A family dinner was held. Mr. Sampson is currently employed by Utah Power and Light Co. in Salt Lake City where the couple plans to reside. Salina Turned 120 Last Week; Heres What Happened During Town Centennial of 1963 BY VI JUDGE Dear Sampson , Hatch Wed in Murray 20, 1983 ' velous idea, we thought. Our turkeys came out juicy, tender, and temptingly brown, as did the pies. And any juice that boiled out went into the bag instead of on the oven floor. But, alas, we had to quit using the brown bags for baking because another reader warned us that heat releases harmful chemicals used in manufacturing the bags that could penetrate the food. Now, Im collar wondering if this brown-ba- g around the pie tin would also contaminate the pie, as the chemicals are released by the oven heat. Does anyone know for sure? Perhaps we should forget baking or even warming rolls in brown bags. We can prevent juice spills by using the method of professional bakers. You stir the sugar into the fruit until the juice flows out, drain off the juice, and thicken it while the pie bakes. Then it is added to the pie through a hole in the top crust by means of a funnel. Dear Vi: How can we get smoke deposits off our fireplace? The bricks are blond. It will cost us over $50 to have the fireplace cleaned commercially, so we would like to do the job ourselves. Amy Sylvester, Rexburg, Idaho Try a strong solution of phosphate applied with a stiff brush. Rinse well, then if any stains remain, use steel wool and scouring powder or a mechanics soap with sand in it. Test a small space first; proceed cautiously. I have also heard of scrubbing bricks with a brick. Dear Vi: Cotton swabs are excellent for cleaning small cracks and corners in furniture and for getting out the dirt in the tracks of windows and shower stall doors. Ardith S. A bit of cotton wrapped around a toothpick or a used cotton-swa- b stick would serve just as well and cost nothing. Every little economy helps. Readers: This is your feature. Keep those good ideas coming. Mail yours to IT MAKES CENTS, P.O. Box 122, or in care of this paper. ally The director of the Bible Fellowship is Reverend Tim Dowd of the Richfield church.
