This year they were recognized for additional work to fence a riparian area. Award recipients were honored at a luncheon with the governor and first lady at the Governors Mansion. The event was made possible by donations from Aptus, Kennecott, and Mountain Fuel Supply. The Take Pride in Utah program is a partnership of federal, state and private agencies which encourages citizens to take responsibility for John Peckham and the Sorensons Ranch School received separate awards from Governor I spoke with a gentleman re. cently who was most interested in what schools are teaching nowadays. Multiple choice test scores were all fine and good for what they showed. But he was a local businessman, and he was concerned with something more. He wanted to know what we were doing to prepare our children for the world of work. He was concerned with skills, yes. But where was the attitude? The work ethic? Such character building, of course, begins with toddlers. It begins with a childs first teachers, mom and dad. The home is the place to lay the foundation, to mold, to form, to frame. Within the family we first experience teamwork. Cleaning the basement, weeding the garden. If you sweep the floor. Ill wipe off the table. We learn give and take. I used to get angry at my little sister. It was her job to put the napkins on ii the table. My big sister and I were responsible for cleaning the entire kitchen after meals. To a third grader, this is just not fair. It took some patience on the part of my parents to show me that fair" did not always mean equal. Home is where we learn to meet deadlines. You can watch the show when your room is clean. I dont care when you do it today, but the lawn needs to be mowed before it gets dark." You have a watch. Be sure to keep track of the time and be home by noon. Home is where we learn quality. We learn to do it right or do it over. It takes the fine eye of a parent to see the difference between the best effort of a three year old and the best of a thirteen year old. These are the lessons which can spell success, not only in school, but in the workplace, and someday, in a future home with future children who will be taught by the children we care for today. ry & i f .& X zrrr r.f. y V. .
