As your children get settled in school again, and you count up the cost of new sneakers, jeans and book bags, you may be wondering if there is anything more you can do to get your children ready for the school year ahead. I talk to parents all across the country and find that most are worried, frustrated and sometimes just How do I know barely coping. whether my child is learning what he or she needs to learn? I am asked. The essence ofeducation comes down to values, standards, performance, and television. Ultimately, the improvement of our childrens education is also a willingness to slow down the pace of our lives to help our children grow. Education starts with values. Most of us who have made a go of it in life have gotten ahead because we had a Mom, a Dad, a grandparent or guardian who let us know where they stood about our sticking to our studies. Maybe we didnt like it then, but we know now that the values process worked, and still works. Its that simple. Parents create the frame; teachers help kids fill in the picture. AparentdoesntneedaPh.D. to make learning a priority in the home. Ifyouhaventmadeitinlife quite the way you expected, you can still make sure that your child does. A good education can do that. Some folks say that setting high standards is unfair. I dont if the students, teachers and parents work together to reach the higher standard. Children who get smart, get smart because they study and take tough courses to meet high standards. If you help children read novels, create stories, tackle real-lif- e math problems and get into the excitement of science, they will learn more and score higher on tougher tests. It doesnt really matter whether they come from high-incout - or back- low-inco- grounds. Setting standards means encouraging your child to take the tougher course, the tougher teacher. Be careful not to dumb down your own child -- - and dont let the school do it either. So how do you raise performance and give children a sense that they can do better? If a parent or parents will spend one hour with their children each night on their schoolwork this coming year, we will transform this nation. Teachers and schools should explain to you the practical ways you can help your children to learn. Thats their job. Finally, a word about that friendly monster, television. Children loveBameyand thats greaL And Beavis and Butthead is here to stay. But wouldnt it be refreshing if parents got some help from television producers and execu tives? Some rule of proportion about violence and a willingness to ask a basic gut question: Is this good for kids or will this just sell the product? In the end, I suspect, you will be on your own when it comes to TV. The same little remove control button that can turn on your TV can also turn it off. Try it, then sit back. This may be where you have to start to make the process of learning important again. Getting our kids back to school is more than a shopping trip for you or for me. Its a commitment to the possibility that our children can really have better lives if we all make the effort together and do it now. Richard Riley U.S. Secretary of Education Mixed bag for big game hunters. Theres good and bad news for big game hunters in the southeastern part of Utah. First the bad. Deer hunting will be tough. Few fawns were bom during six years of drought Last years winterkill took between 20 and 60 percent of the 92 fawn crop. Many of the adults also succumbed to the effects of drought-ravage- d range, and deep, crusted snow. The result is low numbers of deer and a pretty good challenge come opening morning. Now for the good news. The elk population is in good shape. Reproduction during 1992 was good. Since last years calves are now yearling bulls and cows, hunters can expect to see good hunting this year. Season opens for upland game. The season opened September 1 1 for most of the states upland game hunters. Scattergunners throughout Utah will be combing the hills for sage grouse, forest grouse, chuk-kar- s, cottontail rabbits and snow- - shoe hares. Seasons and bag limits are variable for each species, so hunters will want to spend a few minutes with the upland game proclamation. As in 92 hunters 16 years of age or older will need both a habitat stamp and combination or small game license. Bruce Warren Fall is in the air. The mornings are brisk and the afternoons warm. Schoolwork at Salina Elementary is in full swing. GOOSEBERRY went on their overnight field trip to Gooseberry. I enjoy crunching leaves under fooL I like to watch as Autumn rests on the hillside, gaining strength to invade the valley with unmatched color. I like to watch as Autumn finally comes boldly striding over the hills dressed in crimson and gold. I see his morning breath in the mists along river and canal. At night the stars in his eyes twinkle brightly in the cold, crisp air. He comes to light the fires in the maple groves, putashineon thelateapples and pears, and whistle a last farewell to the bounty of summer. Its a restless time. Birds are on the wing, even the tiny hummingbirds that have been dining at our backyard feeders this summer will be traveling more than 2,000 miles to their winter sanctuary. It seems that in Autumn all of nature, (man included) hears the inner promptings urging us all to prepare and be ready to survive winters relentless icy grip. Too soon Autumns richness will fade into the somber shades of early winter. But not yet Till then, while I can. Im going to enjoy watching Autumn take over the valley, and record it deep in my memory. Then some inhospitable winter day when all is grey and dreary. Ill bringtomind the beauty I experienced on a colorful, crisp Autumn day right here in the valley. Itll cheer me up, I know. |
