The shop will be restored to the period of the late 1860s and 1870s when the blacksmith repaired broken wagons and farm implements and shoed horses and oxen. Cove Fort was a major stop on the main route linking Salt Lake City with Mormon colonies in Southern Utah and Nevada. Stage coaches, emigrant covered wagons, and ore wagons regularly stopped at the fort. The blacksmith shop restoration is part of a larger project at the fort which will include other worksuch as a bam, ice ing house, chicken coops, and pig pens. When completed the fort and supporting structures will recrate the environment of a small Mormon settlement on Utahs early frontier. To make the restoration authentic, museum workers are looking for old blacksmithing, horseshoeing and oxshoeing tools.
