In Utah last year 48 optometrists donated free eye care to 384 low income workers and their families. This year there will be 75 optometrists and at least 575 people should benefit from the additional medical treatment available. Based on past experience Dr. Pugh noted that its evident many people in low income families are not doing as well as they could at work or in school because of uncorrected vision problems. We want to eliminate this situation by giving these people access to regular eye care, he said. The Mothers March is unique in that volunteers march intheirown neighborhoods soliciting support to conquer birth defects carrying their own numbered envelopes and identity badges. More than 250,000 babies are bom each year with some type of birth defect. When we realize the impact of this statistic, it helps us understand what part we can play in helping prevent birth defects, said Miss Erdei. The leading causes of death among the nations babies are birth defects and prematurity. The March of Dimes is a partnership of volunteers and health professionals supporting programs to help all babies be bom healthy. Funding comes from voluntary contributions from Elder Mortensen among bats throughout the United States. Rabies positive bats have been diagnosed in Utah this past year. Bats are considered rabies positive until proven negative by lab examination. Because of the potential of cats being bitten by infected bats, rabies vaccination of cats is highly recommended. If a cat becomes involved with a bat that escapes or is not examined in a laboratory, the cat must be considered exposed Ip this situation quarantine for six months is necessary, unless the cat has been vaccinated against rabies within the previous 12 months, in which case it need only received a booster vacci' nation. According to data from the U.S Communicable Disease Center to the evidence of rabies in cats and wild animals appears to be increasing. Proper rabies vaccination of cats is very effective in preventing the disease and also makes things a little more relaxed at home.
