Great-grandparen- ts .9 .3 - An eye witness from the town of Franklin who visited the battlefield, reported that the dead numbered 386, besides many wounded who afterwards died. About ninety of the slain were women and children. Matigan, a crippled Indian, who went to the battlefield with the soldiers as a guide, and was at the scene immediately after the fight, said that the way the soldiers used the squaws after the battle was shameful. Had the Indians committed this deed, historian H.H. Bancroft said, it would pass into history as a butchery, or massacre. Fourteen of Conners men were killed and about 49 were wounded in the fray. Eight more U.S. soldiers died within a ten day period. The battle was fought in deep snow and intense cold. As a result, many soldiers suffered frozen feet. While the troops did find plunder from immigrant companies, including wagon covers with their former owners names, the slaughter was an inexcusable tragedy.
