The savings, would allow about 8200 additional Utahns into the WIC (Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Food program). This is the result of Utah combining its buying power with 1 0 other states and tribal organizations. By participating in this multistate contract, Utah has taken an important step toward improving the health of thousands of babies, says Dr. Mike Fitzgerald, interim director of the Division of Family Health Services. The award of the contract to Carnation and Mead Johnson was announced recently at a press conference in Washington. About 53,000 Utah women, infants and children are now enrolled in the WIC program. Of that total, there are about 14,000 infants eligible for formula. WIC staff encourages all pregnant women to plan on breast feeding their babies if possible, as it is the healthiest infant feeding method. Mothers who breast feed receive various foods and nutritional counseling. The UDOH spends about $26 million each year to serve WIC clients. Unlike a growing number of states, all WIC funding in Utah comes from the federal government. Fitzgerald estimates that before this new contract about half the eligible women, infants and children in Utah were served by the program. We are excited about this extra Un$5 million, says Fitzgerald. federal proregulations fortunately hibit us from using this money for anything but food. We dont have the staff or facilities to serve 8,200 more clients. We are exploring ways to hopefully cover these necessary administrative costs. The stale and tribal organizations participating in this effort are: Utah, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, Nevada, the Navajo Nation and the Inter Tribal Councils of Nevada and Arizona. Smoking mothers have greater risk for birth Central Utah DistriclHealth Department In monitoring the WIC (Women, Infant and Children) participants of the six county area, the amount of pregnant women on WIC who smoke is very low. Of those who smoked prior to pregnancy, the low birth weight (less than 5 pounds 5 ounces) incidence has been about 1 1 . The amountborn under6 pounds is delivery - less than 38 weeks 19. Pre-ter- m complications for gestation - has been about 24 the year. Counties involved in the study include Sevier, Sanpete, Juab, Millard, Wayne and Piute. Some of these mothers quit smoking during pregnancy. For those who quit by the third trimester, low birth weight was 9 and Those who condelivery was tinued to smoke or reduced the amount only slightly had a low birth weight incidence of 14 and pre-terdelivery was The percentage of mothers in the state of Utah who had low birth weight babies is 5.7, and the perdeliveries was centage of pre-ter16.1. Comparing the sets of figures, it is shown that smoking moth pre-ter- ers are at grater risk for having these complications. We encourage all mothers of childbearing age to quit smoking. m 18. 29. QHDIM iSsonstHp (MUXME) The Big Bang Theory UHP Trooper Terry Smith You may think Im talking about the beginning of the universe as some scientists believe. No. This is the summer season and the Fourth of July is close upon us. The big bang I am talking about isnt even fireworks. Its the bang you get when you forget to buckle your seat belt and your head bangs the windshield of the dash or even worse, the roadway!! Its summertime and we do more driving. Our highways and secondary roads fill with motorists out for summer fun. Its the time of year when we also have a tendency to drive faster and longer than we should. As you go on your vacations and getaways, remember this simple rule: Crash severity increases proportionately with speed at impact In simple words, your chances of death or serious injury double for every 10 miles per hour ol increased vehicle speed. So, this holiday season, plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time. Dont be in such a hurry. Take your time and enjoy the trip as much as the destination. Most importantly, at the beginning of any trip, whether to the neighborhood store or to another state, take one precious minute and BUCKLE UP. It may save your life or the life of someone you love.
