The light that he is viewed in in this section, however, is of the darkest hue, and it will be a long time before he can square himself. The latest activities of W. D. is the course of correspondence carried on between himself and the Automobile club of Colorado. .Bill, before making an investigation of the exact conditions pertaining to the Salina can- yon highway, broadcasted the news ' i that the canyon road would be closed, due to the operations of the con- -' struction company building a grade to the coal mines. Taking a report of unconfirmed news printed in a Salt Lake paper that the canyon highway woul be closed, Bill Rishel, evidently wit i no good thoughts of Southern Uta i in his mind, forwarded one clipping at least to the Colorado Springs headfamily and quarters of the Colorado Automobile pathy of the entire community is exEvery public improvement we make in Salina is another club, and in his letter he raps the tended to the bereaved husband and Pikes Peak Ocean-to-Ocehighway paving block laid in the road leading to increased civic prosperity. , in it family. Of course, the State Highway Commission of Utah does not Tecognize it as such, neither does the Federal government, which has refused to place it on the Federal Aid System. Also, neither i.s it mentioned in the new numbering system for interstate highways. I am merely calling your attention to this article, realizing that any attempt on my part to induce Colorado Springs to give correct routings in Utah impossible. Very truly yours, '.UTAH STATE AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION, By (signed) W. D. Rishel, Manager. Southern Utah feels keenly the attitude of the representative of the Utah State Automobile association. Southern Utah retail merchants look to Salt Lake for their supplies. Thousands of dollars find their way from the southern section. The spirit of selfishness does not predominate down here where all are trying to exploit Utah from one end to the other. And to have one man use the hammer with his utmost force to dampen prosperity and keep tourists out, will be resented most furiously, and if the representative citizens of the capital of the state encourage and tolerate such actions, the merchants of the south could find some other source of supplies. This last action has already been broached and is being discussed by many. But Southern Utah merchants would prefer to be friendly with the Salt Lake wholesalers and send the large volume of business to its own capital. They cannot, however, swallow the pill being administered by the head of the Utah State Automobile association and continue to be friendly. While Rishel is putting forth his most vicious efforts to crush .the is making a Pikes Peak route,'-hdismal failure and the thousands of tourists are quickly finding him out. Rishel doesnt like the Pikes Peak route, because a few thousand tourists travel it in order to have good roads, and then it affords a quicker e trip for eastern tourists to the great and wonderful scenery to be found in Southern Utah only.' The Pikea Peak route may not have the recognition of the Utah state road commission and the federal government, but it does have a big bulk of the travel, and if Mr. Rishel will just continue his rapping stunts, it will have all the travel. Lets all boost Utah, and it would be mighty fine if the head of the Utah State Automobile association would join in this one movement. If the traveler wishes .to go Salt Lake way, he is the judge. If he wants to visit the wonderful scenery of Southern Utah, let him do so.' Instruct the men who have been delegated to knock the Salina canyon route to keep off. the job, and let them, too, refrain from instructing, the travelers where to go. We who are living in Utah want to see it grow, so forget it, Mr. Rishel, and boost every section. - William Koger, who claims Pam-p- a, , TexaS, as his home, betrayed a confidence and as a result was fined n(i the automobile he WU dfir- tained and shown a real time at the-$- 5P annual reunion this year.
