Charles Bertrand, a member of the French Chamber of Deputies, was presi- dent of the organization. Another prominent was delegate Julien David, a member of the Belgian chamber of deputies one of the few men to be captured by the Germans who escaped and returned to their old regiments. Ezio Gioja, head of the Italian delegation, was wounded four times with the loss of one leg. Sessions of the convention were atrepresentatended by twenty-eigh- t tives from the following powers: United States, represented by five members of American the Great Legion ; Britain, France, Belgium, Italy, Rumania, Czechoslovakia and Serbia. Tills answer was made to queries by the new national commander of the American Legion, Alvin M. Owsley, as he passed through Indianapolis, national headquarters, on his way to New York to bid bon voyage to the Fidae, five days after the Legion convention In New Orleans. Mr. Owsley had spent a day with Ills parents In Denton, Tex., received a big hug from his mother and a hearty handshake from dad, been carried on the shoulders of Ills home-towadmirers, then hurried to New York for a last meeting with the distinguished foreign visitors, who, as delegates of the Interallied veterans organizations, ljeld a peace conference In New Orleans in conjunction with the Legion convention. In Denton, Tex., after Commander Owsley had been carried to the public square, the inevitable occurred for this outstanding orator of the Legion a speech. He said : Any personal honors which 1 have received I bring to you now and lay at your feet." Mr. Owsleys career is interesting. He was born In Denton June 11, 1888. He attended the public schools of Texas and later graduated from the Virginia Military institute, Lexington, Va., In the class of 1909, where he merited the honor as first captain of his class. Following his graduation he entered the University of Texas and there graduated In 1912. During this time he instructed in the schools of Texas. He entered the firm of lawyers of Owsley & Owsley, which was founded by his grandfather, and practiced law In Denton, Tex. He was elected a delegate to the thirty-thir- d legislature of Texas from Denton county In 1913, gaining great prominence by his persuasive oratori- - united tlice two colonics. jiul tlicy formed the Congregational church. Tbe pictures we paint of lliese pisv pie causes the rising generation to .slum contact with these early Americans. There is more communicruelty in the average-sizety today, there Is more tyranny in the land this moment among industrial classes, more unreasonable civic taxation, to say nothing of various religious restrictions, than was exacted in those days of the Pilgrims regime. There have been more unjust accvh sations against these nation found ers than Americans realize. Those people were not half as blue" or severe as we have been led to believe. They were human and most charitable. Let us teach and preach to love and revere them. Law Did Not Exist, la Claim. Arthur Gilman, a great authority on legal affairs in the colonies, writes thnt it Is almost needless to say that the blue laws, which have been made the butt and Joke and object of violent objurgation, were never lu existence in that colony, but were manufactured by a writer who desired to hold the colony up to ridicule." Certified copies of these blue laws fall to materialize. In fact. New Jersey, Virginia, and parts of the South, were by for more strict about the observance of the First Day" sj the Sabbath was called. New Jersey forbade traveling for pleasure, or other similar recreation. Infraction of these rules might be punished by the whipping post, a fine or imprisonment Let us not point our fingers too sharply at the Pilgrims. It may surprise some to read that rum, Madeira wine and punch, with plenty of mule power (klek) could be obtained in Pilgrim communities. The ordinances specified tbe prices to be charged. Ladles often served the drinks at the public taverns, which were under the Immediate Jurisdiction of the county laws. Those taverns were clean, wholesome places, often serving on the Sabbath as places of religious worship. We are all glad that the pioneers had good things and knew how to use them. FREEDOM FROM LAXATIVES Discovery by Scientists Has Replaced Them. Pills and salts give temporary relief from constipation only at the expense of permanent injury, says an eminent medical authority. Science has found a newer, better way a means as simple as Nature Itself. In perfect health a natural lubricant keeps the food waste soft and moving. But when constipation exists this natural lubricant is not suflicient. Medical authorities have found that the gentle lubricating action of Nujol most closely resembles that of Natures own lubricant. As Nujol is not a laxative It cannot gripe. It is in no sense a medicine. And like pure water It 13 d Also, Writer Asserts, Far More Liberal Minded Than Is Generally Believed. They were double Protestants, having rebelled against not only the Roman Christian methods but also against the regal or English government church. In the belief that they could not reform tlte former and certainly not amend or change the latter, they chose to go to Holland and later to America, there to worship as they pleased. The Puritans believed they could alter the Episcopal or government church, so they remained faithful to the regal religion and the sovereign.
