Show Utah Has Lowest Mileage Death Rate Of Western States For 1958 At a meeting of citizen leaders and public officials July 31, Robert D. Hopper, District Director, National Safety Council, commended the state of Utah for having the lowest mileage death rate of the Group IV States participating in the Annual Inventory of Traffic Safety Activities. (Mileage death rate Number of deaths per motor vehicle miles of travel). (Group IV States are Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oreand gon, Utah, Washington , Wyoming.) In presenting a summary of the traffic safety program, Mr. Hopper congratulated Governor Clyde for his leadership, and all the public officials with responsibilities in traffic, along with the fine support given the official program by the Utah Safety Council, made up of citizen leaders of the state. The state won an award from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators for its Driver Licensing, Driver Improvement and Control program. 'The Driver Licensing Section was evaluated at The total activities evaluated and the scores: Accident Records 73; Traffic and Highway Engineering 83; Police Traffic Supervision 75; Driver Licensing 86; Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection 100; School Traffic Safety Education 80; Public Traffic Safety Education 76; Organization for Traffic Safety Improvement 77; Total program 81. Although Utah had a death rate of 5.2 deaths per 100,000,-00- 0 miles of travel, 103 people were killed; 5,638 were injured, and the economic loss is estimated to be $26,000,000. Analysis of the reported 1958 activities reveal the following recommendations of the various national advisory groups: ACCIDENT RECORDS 1. That additional personnel be provided to process and analyze accident reports. 2. That present tabulations of accident data prepared for engineering, education and enforcement use be studied and analyzed to be of maximum value "to those agencies. TRAFFIC ENGINEERING 1. The Department might consider the assignment of a fulltime traffic engineer for several of the Highway Department Districts, particularly in those districts where highway mileage is great, and where the proportion of urban population is high. 2. Increase man - days on special studies for municipalities to determine traffic engineering solutions to their problems of moving vehicular and pedestrian traffic along major streets within the municipalities. s on stu3.
